Super well done you two, for the better half to be chomping at the bit is beyond brilliant..........

With this "Hot water, 2 x showers, electric toilet, great galley etc" have you not bought a motel?

Amazing the number of times that "elec loo" comes up in couples purchasing yachts..........for sure 100% agree.............

Yes working on your own boat is at least 100x more satisfying than someone elses............

Keep us posted with the upgrade photos................also from Refuge Bay, Port Stephens, Coffs, Mooloolaba, Whitsundays..........

Hahaha, damn you. I called about the spacesailer about 2 hours after "someone" promised a deposit. Now I know who that someone was! Well done, I liked the boat too.

Sop this one is still for sale @ $20k - www.dbyboatsales.com.au/listing/defiance-30?utm_source=seabreeze.com.au
or this one @ around $17k - www.boatsales.com.au/boats/details/1989-mottle-820/SSE-AD-6491458/?Cr=59

Basically I am in the same space as a lot of people, have crewed on Farr 40s, some unknown 36', and a few 30'. But I have never owned my own. Since I no longer live in Tassie (boating heaven), all my rich mates cant help me, so it looks like I need to become the "rich" one, and buy my own.

Wife has no sailing experience, and we have a 6yo daughter + small dog. At this stage we are not looking at club racing, but i wouldn't rule it out for some fun in a few years. WE love getting away for long weekends and in general the water calls me every day, so any excuse to be on, in or under the water is hard to refuse.

Good day everyone,
First of all, I want to say congratulations with your decision to buy a yacht, I know how much it means for a man that is going to buy these types of things. As my father says, the best investment that a human can do, is to invest in resting, because if you rest good, with quality, than you become more productive. Also I remember when I was testing different boats from www.laurenbergercollection.com/private-luxury-yacht/ I found the perfect one for me. So, the answer to all your questions is yes!

Hi everyone

The wife and I are looking at purchasing our first yacht. Yay!!!!We are also kiwis who moved to Sydney a year and a half ago so have a lot to learn in the ways of a yacht owner!! We live out in Palm Beach so having the Pittwater right there seems like the perfect chance to get out and learn to sale.
We have worked on super yachts for the last 8 years so are not new to the water. Just relative newbies to sail boats.

A couple of quick questions of things we are unsure of.

-Is insurance compulsory for a yacht in NSW?

-If so does someone know where I might be accepted for insurance with 10 year old rigging. -Is it possible to get a report done on the state of the rigging in order to get insurance if the rigging is in good nick after light use.

-Do I need insurance?

We will most likely replace the rigging next year if we purchase this yacht. Just a rather large expense straight off the bat when there are so many other initial associated costs.

Also any advice on moorings and wait lists would be amazing. We will be trying to something in Careel bay or Clareville if we can.

Thanks heaps, we are very excited and am sure will have a million more questions lol

probably already answered by others, but

insurance is not compulsory until you need to use a marina or slipway. they will require it

no insurance co will accept 10 yo rigging

if you need insurance depends on how deep your pockets are. i personally don't insure stuff i can afford to loose. public liability is another issue you should consider (also the situation with marina's & slipways)

i expect the waiting list at careel bay / clareville is a couple of years. you might need a commercial mooring (for which you will need insurance)

good luck

cheers,

Try getting insurance on an 80 year old yacht. Not a snowballs chance in hell. Doesn't matter how well maintained as soon as you say 1937 as build date they run a mile. Well first they say, I didn't hear you right, did you say 1937? Well yes I did. Sorry we only cover yachts after xyz date. I have managed to get 3rd party but no one will touch comprehensive.

Yes I feel for you.
They only want to insure boats that fit their 'no claim' policy.
Could you tell us who gave you 3rd Party please?

New Wave Marine should insure you no problem but if the mast comes down the payout will be market value only not replacement new value. So the total boat value will be made up of parcels for hull, engine, rig and sails, miscellaneous etc or similar. They are very easy to deal with on line.

newwavemarine.com.au/

I just did their online quote. Asked very few questions, so few it makes me wonder, do they not want to know anything about the boat I am insuring?! also salvage was not specifically mentioned in cover. Has anyone else had experience with these guys? And been paid out!?

New Wave Marine's backers pulled out in January and from 1/2/21 they are now backed by Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. So the comments on New Wave Marine in the above back in 2020 may or may not now be valid. The whole insurance industry has gone through a tad of turmoil recently, as have all industries...............

Until you damage something, be it another boat or some infastructure, then you discover its true worth.

I am the same boat (excuse the pun), I have to replace the rigging having just purchased the boat but I did get to negotiate the purchase price based on that expense and now I get to have full use of brand new standing rigging that you could argue the seller paid for. I thought that was actually a pretty good scenario for a buyer.

You require 3rd party property cover to use any public slips or marinas. The 10 year life on rigging is just a scam. If you were to do a survey on your local mooring field the majority of the yachts with 10 year old rigging have probably done less than a hundred hours of sailing. It's a good chance you will be replacing good Australian SS wire for Chinese. Plenty of long distance cruisers sailing with 25+ year old rigging!

You still pay the same premium, it is a scam but your kinda screwed, if your gonna pay for insurance you don't want to leave them anyway out of paying in the event of a claim.

I guess you don't risk what you can't afford to lose, I have encouraged all my kids to buy cheap first cars because they can't afford the full comprehesive insurance on a good one at 18 years old.
