Everything is ready to go. I leave for Smith Creek on Saturday, should arrive on Monday. This will give me a lot of time to help out and also get some sailing in. Only been out twice this year on the very rough and wet sod farm, I think I am going to get my *ss handed to me. My lofty goal is to NOT come in last.

Looking for any advice that may help me during practice. Keep in mind I have almost no experience but will have a week to practice. I want to compete but I also do not want to screw up the serious competitors. I will try keep out of their way as I pass them on the windward side.

I will take and post as many photos as I can.

There will be very light to non existent winds at the worlds. Get as much practice as you can with your biggest sail. You're a big boy like me and you will need the extra sail. I'm sure you will never be overpowered while you're there and I think you will find you have no choice but to go big.

They will be lucky to get any starts and if they do you better have your track shoes on! Because you'll be pushing. If you have a 6m or better sail you might not be! My biggest is a 5.5 and it will be the only one getting dirty!

I also suggest you start drinking water, nothing but water! I'm not kidding, I hunt the desert every year for ten days and I start drinking two to three weeks before to acclimate my system for lots of water intake. Your water intake while in NV should be at least a gallon a day. Make drinking a habit now and you will be sure to be drinking plenty in the desert. You were at the ALC in Ivanpah and the conditions were nothing like what you will be facing at Smith creek in July.

The conditions forecast for the worlds is piss poor at best. The lightest guy or the fastest pusher will win it, no doubt!!

As far as racing,
Like all racing, if you run your own race and not be too worried about the other guys (except for the start) it will be safer for you, and them. Then you can concentrate on doing your best, like you practiced. The other competitors will have the experience to avoid you as long as you run clean and know if someone is there before you make a move.

I'm sure that even if all your tires are flat and your sails torn you will still have a great, unforgettable time.

look at destoya?. I've sailed there the last 2 years in late June at the Holy Gale. The first year the wind blew like made about 25 to 35 mph out of the SW. The second year was more typical according to the regulars. It starts around 11 am with huge dust devils SW in direction. It's a bit fluky at first. Some races started in 20 mph then went down to 5 mph or so. I had to push in a few races which is typical at any regatta. As the day goes by the wind clocks around to the West then to a very steady 5 to10 mph N West in the evening as the day cools. Some of the races were in 15 to 20 mph winds. Most were in less. I've been following the wind forcast for the last few weeks and the pattern is the same. Some days wind in the 20's most days 15 or less but never any non wind days so far. Last year my first day I sailed from lunch until dark. I sailed every day plenty. It's the best place I've been for consistent sailing even tough it's shifty and up and down at first. The scenery is fantastic with Tstorms in the adjacent mtns. Last years evening sail in my class2 wingboat wind 5 to 10 mph. -

Yeah, and see how much you can scare yourself!
On the other hand they will be good for light winds or towing bigger yachts up to sailing speed in light winds.
Some bigger yachts will sail quite well in light winds once they are moving above rolling resistace speeds.
I have towed Landyacht in Vindicator up to sailing speed with my Promo, in average wind

Thanks TP1 I will leave the big sails at home. I have 3 sails for my land yacht Sailworks 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5. That ought to do it.

I have heard that we will wear out tires because of the abrasive surface. How many spares would be recommended.
Will be sailing 7 days before and 3 days of racing.

If your wheels are cambered you can change them(inside for outside) to make them last longer/wear more evenly. Other than that, how many spares do you have, how much space do you have

If light winds are forecast then I reckon those big fat knobblies should almost just about do it. maybe 3-4 spares JUST IN CASE
I find that the my club 88 (ribbed tyres) only needs new shoes when the wind is blowing and that is on limestone (lake Walyungup), maybe every 3-4 weeks. The knobblies are heavier and harder to get going than ribbed tyres but they do last a lot longer I still have a set attached to the original rims I turfed to the garage from when I first started sailing my LLM, they lasted a full season (no racing).
Also the psi of the tyre and the rolling resistance of your bearings will play a big part too. The fella who won the mini/blokarting races at Lefroy last year had his rear tyres inflated to 45psi (I'm not endorsing this) and used wet towels in between races to ensure they didn't pop in the heat. If your bearings still have the packing grease in them, soak them in petrol to dissolve the grease and lube them with a light oil or some fellas use inox. I also remove the bearing seal facing the inside of the wheel to further reduce resistance.
Probably just common sense but if you can, latch onto a more experienced sailor and follow them as they will inadvertently help you find the best places to tack and where to point too, not that it helps me much I still manage to muck things up at some stage

Lots of space. Have 3 spare tires mounted on wheels and 6 unmounted new tires. Hope that is good, all the stores are out of tires.

Ivanpah is known to wear out tires. Smith Creek not as much. I'm still running the same rear tires I've used in the last 2 regattas

yes I am still a bit wet behind the ears but if the winds are super light and you have lots of downtime then maybe release the tension on your battens
or shave them a smidge.It can't hurt to play with your outhaul either and find what works and what doesn't.
ribbed tyres would be the go though

If you need tires I will have some brand new ones I can give you to race on or use for practice and save your select tires for racing. I'll be there Saturday afternoon.

They are size 4.00-8.

Expect temperatures in the 100's.

Thanks, I have enough new tires in my trailer to open a shop.

looks like another Canadian is joining the fray.

i apparrently screwed up my sail number . Canadian numbers start wit KC, who knew.? Anyway, I think the race committee will be able to figure out CAN 1. They should have a lot of time, if those wind numbers are accurate, I am not moving, even with my 6.5

should get there sat evening or sun morning

Yes the sail prefix has caught many a person out over time ........... It's actually an International yachting 'standard' that had been around for many years, It has changed in some water sailing classes in about 1999 with more exposure to the puplic with the Olympic sailing.

On the road to Smith Creek. 1250 km today. Got to Idaho falls and all the hotels were full because of the July 4 celebrations. One more hour down the road to find a room in Pocatello. Nice fireworks displays as I drove past all the small towns. Will get to Smith Creek on Sat.

Barney, looking forward to meeting you. Good to see another Canadian on board, perhaps our national pride will not need to be damaged. Drop by for a beer.

I just got off the phone with Glen at Smith Creek. Winds have been around 6 to 12 mph first 2 days. Enough to race. Today 10 to 15 gusts to 20 . Perfect.

That's good to hear! Hope it holds til the racing is done. Better yet, I hope it builds enough momentum to get the big guys going, and the big boats too. Are you running your big boat at the worlds John?
