Hi Guys,

Going to jump on board to this Topic. Loving the advice and chat from all.

I'm a newbie to all this, I finally have my own gear. Been out on my own 3 times at Dolls Point as its the only spot I know. Would love to meet up with you guys to give some advice and to watch and learn.

I feel I know the Technique It's just trying to put it into practice. Either I go over the board Superman style or don't get enough power to get up.

When I do get up I don't have enough power in the kite to keep it rolling. Regular stance heading out isn't bad, But coming back goofy is an effort. I just can't figure out whats going on. AND to top it off I wake board and Snowboard! Which makes me think this is a hindrance.

Anyway.. I need more practice and hope to get out this weekend but it looks like its going to be a wet one.

Whats Hollywood Road area like compared to the other side of the bay at Kurnell? I read that you need to watch for the seaweed and sea Urchins. But it has flat water and is shallow over there?

All feedback and replies greatly appreciated.

Hope to see you out there

Wilko

Try pointing the board more downwind to stop yourself going superman.

Kurnell is my favourite, but Hollywood's etc are much closer for me. Much less beach at both places than Doll's, so it's helpful to be confident launching. I think Doll's has stronger currents and a lot of non-kitesurf water traffic which can make it trickier sometimes.

Manlykiter, my job really isn't paying much right now! It's a trade-off...

How much wind do you think there was when you arrived? Seabreeze was showing 20+ on the charts, but I didn't feel overpowered. I think the wind picked up for you!

See you out there soon, Wilko!

Thanks JMS

I do need to figure out what I'm doing and point more down wind.

Up at Dolls point I have had some epic body drags to get back to my board. I've also ended up near the yacht club at Dolls Point where I found out that the wind is sheltered. I then drifted to the Oysters on the wall and cut myself to shreds.

I laugh at it now.

The exact same thing happened to me! I sailed into the wind shadow of the yacht club, then dropped my kite when the wind unexpectedly disappeared. I had to do a self rescue as there were too many boats and kids around to attempt a re-launch by the time everything had settled down. Luckily I managed to get back to the beach.

I think it was about 18 knots when I arrived, to be honest im not really good at estimating wind strength. The wind did pickup, but only close to the shore so I was struggling to keep up on the plane then overpowered when I got in close - strange!

I was contemplating going out today but the weather is rubbish!

I was curious because the charts for the airport were saying the wind was quite high, but I wasn't feeling particularly powered up. Newb issues I think, as everyone else was doing fine!

I always find I get a lift close to shore, and can point upwind more.

Hi,

Are u guys still kiting? If so, did you upgrade your kite quiver for light winds? I need some advice, also I am not aware of wind speeds during winter since I have not paid much attention last year. Are there many days of only 8-15 knots wind? I am keen on upgrading to a much bigger sail, say 14m or so? However I am only a 65kg boy and concerned if I will ever manage this power? I would appreciate any suggestions!

thanks

Tobias

hey Tobias,

Cant speak for the others but im still kiting! only been out once in the last month though as not much wind around.

Ive now got a 9 and a 12m quiver and have been toying with the idea of a bigger kite for those really light wind days.

I cant comment on what size kite will be suitable for you, but i will say there are specific light wind kites whcich are much better suited to the the job (ozone edges 13, 15 and 17, epic v2, zephyr mk1 and 2, slingshot turbine, blade fat lady ect) than just any old 14m kite

Have you thought about getting a surfboard? much less wind required to get going on one of those i hear

Hi all,

I've done a few lessons, but am still a complete noob. Just bought some gear today and am keen to get out for the first time without an instructor.

Anyone heading to Dolls Pt tomorrow arvo? Would be great to get to know a few locals to kite with (esp launch/land, Im bit nervous about that...)

Cheers,
Nik

p.s... I'll be the one flopping around trying get my **** together on blue 14m Cataylst ;)

Hi Nik,

I am planning to come (if wind is ok) and I would be happy to help you. Also KP may stick around who may help you to launch your kite. It would be also good to see if your 14m is suitable for these winds. Btw. how much do you weigh? Is it a 2013 or 2014 Catalyst?

Cheers
Tobias

Anyone fancy coming with me to try out Boat Harbour on Sunday, assuming the forecast stays good?

Hey JMS.
Do you have a 4x4, or were you walking in? I'm keen to try a new spot but will wait to see what the wind really wants to do.

I'm checking it out because I need to find good spots for Southerlies.

I've got a Honda CRV, which is almost a 4wd. The rear wheels kick in when the front wheels slip (just *after* you need it). I was planning on taking it onto the beach, but it's not the perfect vehicle for it.

It'll be my first time outside Botany Bay, possibly with (slightly) larger waves, hence why I'm looking for company! I'm also thinking of checking out Wanda, but that should be much more wavey.

I'm keen, but lets touch base tomorrow. I'm interested to see what Wanda or Boat Harbour has to offer.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused as to what the weather will do tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

I got out today at the jeep flags, between 4 and 6. So good to get back on the board! The wind direction was fine, although I'd still like to check out new places to give myself more options.

Hey Fabian, nice to hear your going to give kitesurfing a go.

You want to get hold of the progression DVD's, they are quite old but really good. As far as lessons, id recommend going through kitepower at botany bay if that's handy for you. The lessons are 1 on 1 with helmets that allow the instructor to communicate with you easily while you are in the water.

Have fun!

Fingers crossed! The bom charts at www.bom.gov.au/marine/wind.shtml?location=nsw-syd&tz=AEDT are looking a little less optimistic, but I'm really hoping to get out. I've got a brand new 14m kite to try....

It's a 14m Switch nitro 3. It's high aspect ratio, should pull upwind a lot and jump well but take a bit more work to get going or relaunch. I'm looking forward to comparing it to my 11m low aspect ratio Crazyfly Moowii. Did you get out today?

Got yourself a full quiver now!! Nice one. I didn't get out on my 14 Cat, but borrowed Tootharoo's 15 Edge for a run. It was that borderline. Needed to get wet. It's been 4 weeks!!!!!! Got tomorrow sorted if it does blow up. Text me if your heading down.

I'm hoping the forecast does stay true.... since buying some gear and attempting to learn, I've only had one day over 15kts and that was a gusty southerly in which very little success came my way.. .

Will be interesting to see how I go tomorrow ;) I'll be at farKurnell at 230

Hi guys,

Anyone going out tomorrow? Hope it will be okay. Tuesday sucked a bit, was out with the 8m first at Dolls (no wind) then somewhere at Ramsgate (gusty like hell with heaps of wind gaps). Where are you guys going? I will bring my 15m need somebody to launch. I assume the IKEA-bag self launch method will be too risky for such a big one.

Cheers
Tobias
