the old nervous turd aye
I have de-sensitized my self over the years with repeated exposure to silly conditions.
It's good in some respects as I operate without fear paralising me. After all it is usually the fear and aprehension that causes a failure in the first place. Riding with confidence and confiction usually works out well.
But at the same time because of the reduced fear levels I've put myself into dangerous positions I should have walked away from.....
Don't go to far offshore as winter winds are fickle and can drop out with little or no warning resulting in a long swim/self rescue to get back in.

To answer waveslave there's tons of kites that can handle 20-40+ knots even up to 50 knots I see them out all the time.
50 not. ^^^
lol.
Hey Rad,
I reckon you've achieved worlds best practice in bullsh1tting.
How's the quality of the waves in a 50knot sh1tstorm ?
*Give me a freaking break.

It gets wild down here man. Radman is not bull****ting you. Just operating at a different level than you think possible. There's not many days gusting to 50 knots but when they do occur it is madness.
I actually think you get to a certain wind speed. around 38-40 knots and the wind starts to blow the water smoother... its a weird sensation but i've seen it various times before.
How are the waves? that depends on the size of them and the direction of the wind. If its double head + and cross shore then the shear volume of water moving can suck the wave face smooth. The upwind face can sometimes be abliterated but down the line can stay clean.

Hey "slave" dont try judging everyone else by your own ability,if you want proof ask Alazon he was on the beach at the time i was out for 2 hours on my 6m and the wind hit 100 klm 3 times while out there ,recorded on the local weatherstation 500m down the beach with a 3 second average, only about 4 of us made it on the water and it was absolutely crazy conditions.
i saw a couple of guys get caned in the biggest gusts but it was a hell of a ride.
Belive it or not i dont really care
other guys were on 5, 6.5 and a 120 kg rider on a 7

Yea plummet the surf was huge 3-4 m and inbetween the swells it was smooth as,with foamy scudds everywhere, once out the back it was easy to handle the gusts i'd throw toeside and run with the wind while doing this you could drop about 5-10 knots running off the wind and calving down the faces till youd get closed out, nothing like it![]()

Who the heck is 'Allano' anyway ?? ^^^
Tell me Rad ...
These 50 knot wind conditions that you love so much ...
How do you like to kite them ...?
The rip and tear method or do you just park and ride ?
lol.
Have ridden in winds peaking 50 twice but have had numerous sessions in winds gusting 40+ until you grow a pair slave and give it a try you'll never know what it's like Alazon is another sea breeze member who rides at my local frequently so instead of trying to give me b*lls**t pm him if you don't believe me.
Also get out there and give it a go and you'll find out what riding style you need but make sure you take a heavy duty "death leash"

yeah I've had some sessions like that. I'm getting used to big surf. double/triple head. its scary as **** but at the same time so much cleaner and more predictable because the face has pulled clean. once you get over the bigness its sweeeeeet. Had a session a month ago at a point break. Cross shore but a small headland keeping the wind off the actual wave. super clean faces double head and an endless stream of them... nobody else there just me. blissfully ripping. then smashing a massive boost of the next super clean wall on the way back out. oh farken yeah.
Back to the topic of surviving a storm front.I have been caught out once.I consider myself lucky that I was afew hundred mtrs of the beach. The biggest problem I had was, that prior to the front hitting ,the wind was manageable on my 10mtr kite. When it hit I got shot up into the air.my board was 50mtrs behind me and all I could do was go into survival mode.As the kite was getting smashed from above ,I was getting dragged closer to the beach.decided to release the safety .The kite did what I hoped it would do and crashed down on the water.( five line kite)Very carefully I pulled the kite up to me before it hit the beach.defalated.My biggest mistake was, that I wasn't looking over my shoulder to see what weather was coming. If you see a massive rain front or cloud formation approaching you have to decide quickly what to do.Guys don't confuse this topic also with riding in 40 plus winds.I have been out in those conditions. You have the right size kite and your prepared.all the best, and keep an eye out over your shoulder.
Yea nice plummet classic west coast conditions, will have to head up the naki for a good storm session with you.
.. I remember that day (sunny clearish day) and it sure was cranking up and swell was very rideable. I was on an 8m Cat when wind between 30 to gust 40k and wind forecasts were meant to drop by lunchtime that day. But after 30mins riding, wind felt like it was increasing so made decision to come back in and was bloody glad I did with someone on beach to grab me and kite as getting a bit of a struggle. As recorded on my windmeter, it was by then ranging between 35 to 48k gust and finally hit 52k so I can confirm Radman is indeed correct in his post above. Flagged the session and the only guys riding were those on 6m kites and below and were looking the most comfortable. Def rideable and enjoyable with the right kite size and make sure the bar and lines, etc are top notch condition esp in those gusts but expect the unexpected to happen re wind increasing unexpectantly - learnt a valuable lesson there and to respect changing conditions
