My wife and I work on a simple basis. 20% of our bonuses/commission go towards whatever we want, with the exception of while she was taking time off for kids because obviously we are on a single salary.

With the 20% basis there are no questions about how and why we spend that 20% with the exception of strippers and blow which are likely to elicit a reaction from her. It's there as an incentive to get things you want and by working towards the greater good of the family, you still get what you want and you don't feel that you are just working towards paying off the house and bills. It's worked so far and I get new kites and boards virtually every year.

30% od my income is bonus/commission..... I'd certainly be winning if I was on that scheme.

Yeah, obviously it doesn't apply to everything and the actual terms need to be reasonable for both parties. I.e. doesn't help much if one person gets $100K in bonuses and the other gets $1K or it's going to be one sided.

I bought a board and in all my pride posted it on Facebook. Probably not the best way to tell my wife that I just dumped a wad of cash on a new toy. It's like ripping off a bandaid, expand your quiver quickly and cop the abuse, then when you need to upgrade sell old stuff and use the confusion technique.
I bought 2 new surfboards this weekend, but it cost me a very expensive dinner and I'll be in debt to the MWF for some time.

It's threads like these that remind me why it's good to be single and no kids.

1. I want a new kite.
2. Go buy a new kite.

My new kite should be in the mail very soon

Actually, the kids need to start paying their way. I see no reason why my 9 year old daughter should hold off any longer.
She definitely needs a new board!

Back in my sailboarding days a friend of mine used to get new gear every year but he kept old board bags and sail bags so the his wife always thought he had the same old gear. He even had a second bank account that all overtime was paid into, his wife thought he was on a fixed wage.

One year his wife said to him, "for god sake get some new gear you have had that old stuff for years, you work hard and don't get paid any extra, you deserve to treat yourself...."

I can relate to this......married for over 10 years, the ex was a CPA and I let her control all of our finances.
While married I had a 2 kite / 2 board quiver, which took some persuasion .
I'm now separated and buy what I like when I like.......currently 4 kite quiver (all 2013), and 6 boards at the moment, with a new Mako King on order
So glad I don't have to negotiate with the minister of finance any longer on how I spend my hard earned.
As mentioned previously.......beg for forgiveness rather than seek approval

Convo this morning ' I took my wedding ring to get that pearl in laid and those diamonds replaced'....oh yeh I said how much?.

"well it's still less than a new board costs and you have 4 of those!!'

how much a new board cost I said?

' well 500 hundreds dollar each!" she said..

So I said...yes you are right, glad you are getting the ring sorted...

Ah that's all bullsh1t about the mangina thing (well mostly you still have to be a slight prick or they would have you doing f All and sitting around with their friends and their husbands talking urbanised sh1t) ways and means of getting the gear you want without pissing the war office off. I still want my clothes washed, dinner cooked and house cleaned Farq it and the occasional root and that won't happen if I'm in the dog house!
