Having kited 50+ knots at Mullaz last season on a 6m. I now look back at that decision and think....STUPID IDIOT.
If its gusty and over 40. Don't contemplate it.
Yes anything over 40 is definitely stupid. No 2 ways about that.
Sounds like you are reading Rule #1 in my little black book!!!
I seem to remember you and I only a few weeks ago with me on a 6m and you on a 5m at rosebud in 45+ gusting. How many were out??? Oh that's right you me and 1 other idiot...
Then there was that time in Brighton about a week later when the police warned us not to go out and the beach boxes were starting to float out to sea.....
Remember those 2 times dong man???
Seems rule 1 in your little black kite book is for everyone else except 2 complete and utter idiots! You and me!!!
Did I mention I'm still a beginner? You should know better than to encourage me out in those crazy conditions dong boy!![]()
Gawd Dan dont tell seebreezers that.. they'll start to think im irresponsible and get the wind police on my arse.. and i was actually referring to women when referring to "my little black book"...
Was very keen... New id be over powered at woodies so went to Melville.. Just didn't have the balls to self launch or land so sat in the car and just watched the squalls blow through... Very scary... Glad I sat that one out
Did I park next to you glass?
Should of went out bud, wasn't that bad. Wanted to go right into the city but common sense prevailed. There is a place you can launch an land at Melville when the beach is washed out, definetly need to know what your doing though.

what day mate?, got out on Sunday at apple x for about an hour. I launched at the small beach area where soul kite parks up. Monday, just sat in the car at apple x and watched as i didn't want to go out with out someone else with me. and then yesterday i went down to woodies in the arvo.
During the big storm about 2 months ago i met a couple of lads who said to launch from just past Dee rd. There vacant block of land there.. there is a bit more sand & grass when the river is washed up.

Do you even know where they are talking about ?
I'll show you
look how close the properties are on either side of that vacant block . Melville is simply a no go area on a cold front .
otherwise you're going to make the papers like sproddy

Have you got a chip on your shoulder or somthing?
ive lived in applecross right near that vacant block of land all my life. so yeh i do know where it is... once again you've assumed i have no idea what im taking about. quite frankly i find it ignorant. everyone one of your posts towards me is spoken in such a condescending tone as if to say im a lesser being then you. well news flash buddy, its just making you look like more and more like a knob.
if you learnt how to speak to people youd find you it would take you a lot further in life.
Glasstraxx
I'd probably suggest stepping back a bit and trying to read & understand what Dusta is saying here...
By your own admission you're a relative newby to our great sport, and we all understand & know how frothing you get once there's a bit of wind about - we've all been there. You've also suggested that you've gone kiting @ Melville in an onshore, frontal wind - after kiting at our beaches in an easterly, kiting @ Melville in an onshore front is about the second most dangerous/silly/stupid/pushing your luck thing anyone can do.
If I could be so bold to assume something, I'd suggest that Dusta's advice to you, is based on his very personal experiences of losing a close mate last year - someone who had much more kiting experience than you appear to have at the moment.
He's not being ignorant, he doesn't have a chip on his shoulder, he's hoping to share knowledge/impart some advice/wisdom to a newby/newer kiter so that you & your family don't have to experience the potential of injury, or worse. I'd safely suggest Dusta doesn't want to attend another kiter's funeral any time. None of us do.
We all know where your head is at Glasstraxx, we're all missing decent/reasonable wind & many of us are frothing to get back on the water ASAP. No one here on SB wants anyone injured/maimed - please take Dusta's comments as well intentioned counsel to you and to all (relative) newby kiters about kiting during winter, at Melville Beach.

no i don't have a chip on my shoulder . It is coming up to a year since i lost a very close mate . You have 8 months experience . IE SFA . Even though you have no experience surely you should can see my point about absolutely zero margin for error at melville . AT least on the coast you have 50m or so of bail out area . Melville you have exactly 3 metres before you are being dragged onto the road and 6 metres before you are skewered on someone's fence .
I am not trying to be a prick here ash, i lost a very good mate and a larger than life kiter in the community .
The way i speak has nothing to do with it, i've mentioned multiple times it is not the spot in winter when it is directly onshore but you just won't listen and go on about how you should launch here or there . Pull your f$%*&^ head in .
Go for it , then in that split second you'll wish you'd listened to some sound no bull**** advice from dusta
Well said to Duster and Juddy . We are all here for a small time so lets live today to kite another and just be a little patient and wait for those hot nice sunny summer days with clean wind from the ocean . I to are a victom of getting out there when I havnt been on the water for a while and pushing it to the limit and ended up with a multiple brake of bones and not being able to kite for a year and cannot go back to full work again for the rest of my life or walk properly and in extreme pain all the time (that happen 4 years ago ) because of one wrong thought of "she will be right mate attaude".
Just saying again think before pump up and the old saying live today kite tomorrow because dieing out there could be the easy way out (not that I want too)
Hey glass man,
I know this advice and bagging from the past few posts is hard to swallow. My advice for what it's worth. Tail between the legs, say sorry to all who replied, admit that they are probably right (which they are) and move on with life!
These forums can be a bit degrading when they get like this, don't take it personally and take the advice given especially from experienced kiters and accept that you've probably been dodging a bullet up until now.
I emplore you to take the advice for what it is and remember it's hard to get any intonation with the written word, don't take it personally mate, appologize and move on, you've got a long life ahead of you on these forums and you don't want to start on this foot!
(For what it's worth)
Crew,
Having read this post over the last few days its good to see the more experienced kiters trying to stop another sad ending , like many here i have kited in wa for as long as most and now back in qld , i remember pushing the my limits to, on those days kites that didnt have the forgiveness that they do now, lucklily and i say luck not skill
then managed to get away with it then.
There wasnt many kiters even giving advice then as we were few and far between, kiting in 30 to 40 in a great seabreeze is so much differnet than the fronts that come through wa , lsiten to the guys over there that have got the bruisers and breaks from stuffing up in these fronts.
There is courage and skill which comes from experience and there is stupidness and injury which comes from lack of, dont be the later , live to kite another ![]()

Haha I seemed to have created quite a bit of stir. I am sorry to hear about your close friend dusta. I can see your really passionate about it all.
I know your all right regarding safety and all that, even before I wrote that previous post. Can see where your coming from for sure...it's a dangerous sport and **** can happen, the best way to learn is from being exposed to these situations in a controlled risk environment.
My post was more aimed at the way to really get advice across. Constructive criticism is much more effective to get your point across.
Just because you may have more experience or knowledge about something doesn't justify being a douche when trying to pass on knowledge.
That's what cause me to right that response, noting to do with safety or kiting Melville in westerlies..

It's actually not something to laugh about but you know what mate it's your life. Do what you want . Honestly over giving a **** .
Apart from kiting safety, there's a lesson here for all of us! Be careful when writing things in forums because a sentence or a word can be read 100 different ways by 100 different people. I can speak from experience and it is the reason I was banned from Facebook. I am a polemicist and it is in my nature to only care about what is true regardless of feelings. I think this thread has gone miles astray and everyone needs to drop their personal feelings and emotions and drop the thread.
Be careful what you write and when reading be careful of how you read! And when all is said and done, be the bigger man (or woman) and don't get caught up in bulls**t talk.
If all else fails arrange to meet at the beach with your arch nemesis and either kite it out or failing that pole each other in the eyes and see who crys the longest! Or compare di*ks in the car park! Either way experience will win out in the end!!!
Just sayin!
Another word of advice. Don't self launch on the grass near the windsurfers when the grass is wet and its westerly.
what the **** is a polemeicists dan? is it rasism towards poleys? use any more bigs words and ill class u too educated for seebreeze forums
I was there when Mark had the accident because he did not pull his QR in time he was a good mate of mine he had a 9 metre kite up.l was on a 17metre kite
He died in an accident he was not overpowered.
If anybody wants to kite in whatever conditions with the right gear it is their choice. Only reason l did not go out in this recent storm with gusts upto 50 knots
is the forecast said chance of hail.

A polemicist is someone who has the core values of polemics! Ironically you can google the word for an explanation on the very same device you asked the question on!
What a circular world we live in.
Just wanted to say to everyone who has commented on Mark, the guy who unfortunately lost his life doing this sport a couple of things:
1 - sympathies to all who knew him, it's really horrible to read about stuff like this and I know it would play on your minds for a long time to come.
2 - if anyone knows his wife/girlfriend/kids or family male sure you stay in touch with them and check on how they are going from time to time as I know when I lost my father early (not related to sport or kiting) a lot of people seemed to drop off the earth and those who checked in from time to time were super appreciated! So don't leave it too long to say hi to his relatives!
Kite safely all!
