No, not tolling, the advice of " slip, slop, slap, yeah fkn what ever" is the wrong advice to tell people. And if you do water sports you WILL get cancer no matter what you do is just so stupidly wrong that I find it hard to believe a trained doctor would give such advice.
Get. Checked.
At least once a year if not every six months. And from bottom of feet , to top of head.
I had two pre-melanoma moles removed in the past month.
55 plus years exposure, no such things as sunscreen as a kid, it was bound to happen, big hole in chest, small hole on shoulder, awaiting biopsies.
use sunscreen, get regular skin checks, avoid ticking time bombs, take care.

sorry didn't know you were a doctor.
Well, actually this one was skin cancer specialist.
He said to do all of them and also moisturise a lot - what do you suggest instead (Dr Loto)
Stats around how many people who slip slop slap religiously, yet still go in the sun for few hrs a day, and if they get skin cancers...? Go for it.
WOW, you can peddle that bicycle fast in reverse lol

Back on topic,
Surfer62, any news yet mate on the test results ? Fingers crossed.
crikey thought I was taking the p*ss in a serious topic. I don't think anyone plans to get cancer anymore than they plan to have an accident
So a doctor saying you will get cancer by virtue of doing watersports is like saying don't go outside your house at all. Stay out of the sun completely can be more harmful to your health and wellbeing. And we all know what a positive impact kitesurfing has on our mental and physical health.
We all know the risks and we take them. I mitigate them by staying out of midday sun, do watersports in mornings late afternoons, don't spend more than x hours in the sun, covering up with clothes/lycra/wettie/hats/sunnies works better than any sunscreen or glorified mud product. I even used moisturiser when I was a teen. But getting sunburnt regularly is just asking for skin cancer.
Bang on Peahi.
Some of the old surfing diggers when I was young that lived shirtless in the sun their whole lives, that have passed on now, didn't die of skin cancer. So this so called " Doctor" is spreading a bit of doom and gloom saying no matter what you do you WILL get cancer if you do water sports.
Some who spend little time in the sun get melanoma , hereditary factors play a major factor.
There have been tests done on mice, exposing them to UV, then using moisturizer on some and none on others. The ones they moisturized had a higher rate of melanoma![]()

That must be painful for the girls, my pain would pale into insignifigance to a boob job, I actually cropped out my nipple to keep it g rated, like the way you think tho ![]()

Thinking of ya mate and your biopsies. Far out!!
Had my yearly skin skin check just last week. Already have had a big chunk removed from my nose a few years back but my nose is so big there's plenty left to go ... "well he does have a big nose " life of Brian.
No one has the answer. Just cover up best you can and get checked regularly.

Aloe Gator Gel is by far the best stuff I've used, can't but it here any more but you can off EBay from the US.
Expensive at around $40 and the tube is small (2-3 will last you the summer)
Gotta make sure you get the GEL though, not the lotion.
Its clear and you don't need to reapply, will last all day long kiting, surfing, whatever.
It's all I'll use, awesome stuff!!
Typical seabreeze where everyone knows better than the professional.
FFS he said 'yes slip slop slap, but its not enough' - you have the best chance if you do that and ALSO keep skin healthy with moisturiser with VitE in it.
The "whatever" is my words - as in yeah we al know abotu slip slop slap. duh. We all do... but apparently its not enough for ME according to my doc.
Nobody said die, he said "get skin cancer"
Nobody said melanoma - which is different.
He didn't say everyone, he said "you" (meaning me) will get skin cancer even if using sunscreen etc (probably as I am bald and skin type prone to sun damage also?) as I am in the sun a LOT
Would it hurt to also moisturise? Of course not.
Would I be silly to not share info that might help somebody avoid a skin cancer? Of course.
