Thanks everyone. I moved the bindings one notch to the toeside and lent on and used front foot pressure for toe side carves (against kite instinct).
I borrowed a file and filed the steering edges.
Totally different experience. Felt totally in control and could go wherever I wanted. So either 1 or all 3 made the difference!
As for lessons I used the snowprofessor videos and am following the steps.
As for ski's, I happily ski blacks. Got a chuckle from the strap a go pro on and slide ways comment above.
As for lifts, I hired a Jucy Car for $21 a day which includes a whole mountain lift pass per day hired (up to 6 days) at Hotham. I was dubious, but no issue redeeming. The rental car is sitting at home in my driveway.
Last tips for anyone having a crack at snowboarding.
1. Get flow bindings. I'm doing twice as many runs as others stuffing around sitting in the snow with ratchets.
2. A bit of blue camping mat and or bubble wrap at the back between 2 pairs of jocks...mint!
Thanks again all for the tips.
You just ratchet as your heading down from the chairlift, no need to sit around
Sorry, I should have been more specific, which ski field in Japan?
Any of the ones I've been to in Shiga and Gifu. Not as epic as the ones in Nagano, but also not half a day's drive ;)

Slightly off topic but how do they compare with Niseko, Suitable for families? Only been to Niseko but there's always more Aussies there than Bali.
why are aus skislopes/snowbord slopes so expensive anyway compared to nz?
I buy a thredbo 365 pass, if you buy when they are on sale they are cheap $650 , you can ski/board as all winter and MTB in summer. Works out very cheap if you live close and go lots like me.

Please don't offer this advice to anyone.

Especially if you cannot even turn
I was a snowboarder before I got into kiting, went last year for the first time in 10 years, was like riding a bike but couldn't believe how strange it felt, I decided to start on the kiddies slope and just couldn't get my grove so I said stuff it and went to the top of the mountain and was surprised how quickly it came back guess I didn't want to die.........
The point was I kept comparing it to how it feels to a Kiteboard, was ruff and harsh on my arches and front shin muscles......oh the memories had faded, I had a blast but noting beats the buttery glide of a kiteboard even in the chop.........
But the long and the short is its totally different the steeper the slope the easier it is and its all about shifting your weight on your back foot and carving front side backside and always on an edge....
Don't suggest you do what my brother and I did. My buddy over there gave us one run down the practice slope then off the to black runs for us!
We learnt quick... damn ice/snow, so fckn cold when you spend most of your day in it!!!
Nagano in Japan is one of the best just think of all the smoke'n hot beautiful friendly Japanese women just wait'n for us Aussies down at the chalets and to finish of the day is a must have Japanese onsen
Do most kitesurfers snowboard or ski ?
Not sure about everyone else but it's too darn cold to ski n snowboard

I was in Oregon state the other week, did a hike on Mount Hood where there's still lots of snow in summer and people skiing/snowboarding. After the hike I drove 30mins to the local spot (Hood River) and kited

i ski only so i can speed ride. cant speedride on a snowboard
What's wrong with Flows? By the second day I was hitting up the black runs just as comfortable as I was on ski's. They never came loose or anything? Every time at the top of the lift there were people sitting around in the snow doing up their ratchets. I guess there must be some reason?
Pretty icey and there was no flat ground left to put bindings on. Don't blame a beginner for planting their butt on the ground. I made a groove, stepped in and was off. But its still one lever vs 4 ratchets. Seriously want to know what the disadvantage of the flow binding is? Before I pay for a set!
