Dear newbies, when you land someone's kite, it's always appreciated.

If you are landing a kite, and you grab the kite, and you are standing 2 meters from a grassy area, please put the kite on the GRASS instead of sand, and the other kiter will appreciate it and think VERY HIGHLY of you.

On many beaches there is only sand so naturally there are no options but to land kite on the sand.

But kites often get wet, and if the beach contains grassy areas where the kites are beeing landed, it really helps keep the kite clean and happy when it's landed on the grass instead of sand. Putting wet kite on sand creates a whole load of mess on the kite and causes grief for everyone.

This has been posted in the past, but I notice this season many people land one's kite direct on sand even though the grass area is immediately next to them.

your kidding right?

Get your mum to wash the salt off your kite when you get home too?

Brush the sand off with your hands princess. Bigger fish to fry like people who never take lessons, have old kites, and launch in marginal conditions x

... just a few more other helpful hints that might get you a beer:

- when flipping kite over, don't slam it down.
- check for any obsticles the rider may not have seen ie sharp stuff like rocks or sticks
- walk towards the pilot to releave the pressure of the lines before flipping over as sometimes the rider can't always come towards you straight away due to stumbling over rocks or sharp stuff
- if windy stay with kite til they get there and if you can put extra sand on it.

cheers,

Robbie

Yeah noobs, also please try and remember to bring 25 meters of red carpet down to the beach with you to lay out between myself and my kite. I don't like walking on the sand when my feet are wet, very irritating having to clean my feet before i get in the car. Just a hint if you want me to say thank you for taking the time to help me out.

No, no kidding. Brushing sand over kite fabric contributes to wear-and-tear in case you didn't realize. Whilst sometimes it's unavoidable, other times it's unnecessary.!

I'm just telling you how to show some courtesy and apply common sense to a fellow kiter - I do it every time! You would probably understand what I'm talking about if you kited for a while and preserving hard-earned kites is important to you.

The correct thing to do, especially for newbies, is to catch the kite, flip it over, and hold it upside down in the air while the kiter comes and takes the kite from you.

The kiter should go straight to the catcher and take it from them and not hang around fiddling with bars or boards or chatting to people or generally dicking around.

I hate it when people flip my kite over onto the sand and pile sand on top of it, but it would be rude to tell somebody off for doing it.

The catcher should never pile sand on the kite. If conditions are strong enough for the kite to blow away then they should hold it for the kiter to take it and make it safe.

In lighter conditions with an experienced kiter as catcher it's reasonable for the catcher to flip the kite over and drop it on the sand and leave it. That's because the kite would have ended up that way if the kiter had self landed and the catcher can get back to whatever they were doing.

You should be able to tell from body language if people want you to do anything else. If not, catch it, hold it, look expectantly at the kiter for them to come and grab it or signal you to put it down.

Or land it straight onto superlizards gear. He will be easy to spot, he'll be the guy on the grassed area. Hes probably one of those blokes that hate newbies because he has been kiting since 'the early c days' blah blah blah blah so he is cranky with gen y and beyond because they have safe gear to learn on and are already busting out handle passes at 14 years old where as old grumpy superlizard goes to the beach each weekend and mows the lawn and hands out advice to anyone who will listen not realizing that everyone is laughing at him.
He probably does the same in these forums, makes out like he knows everything cause he has been there and done it.
I bet your one of those old blokes that think your all that with your big ol zephyr, board with all your details written on it cause you loose 4 every season. You probably also have a go joe and board leash, wear a knee brace and have one of those stupid hats with the strap around them.
Just be grateful that you have someone willing to land you kite!!! Cause with your attitude I doubt you have many friends.

Maybe stop ditching your kite in the water then sand and wet kite won't mix. Problem solved. Jesus, with all the **** that's going on on the world...?!

Two points:

1. It is the responsibility of the kiter to make the kite safe. In fact all launching and landing is the responsibility of the kiter. The catcher just catches and waits for the kiter. The kiter should move to immediately take the kite from the catcher. Obviously an experienced kiter can add their eye to checking stuff and can guide an inexperienced kiter to move to the right position for launching.

2. I always land my kites dry and I usually self-launch and land. I only use a catcher if conditions are extreme and there's somebody around to help. I hate getting sand on my kites because it makes them dirty and causes unnecessary wear and tear.

No. Only if you self launch/land. You have a responsibility when you're doing a CPR (Duty of Care). No one in Australia will sue you. But they might in the US.

In extreme condition you are placing your life into the hands of someone. If someone doesn't feel comfortable, than don't help. Same with a CPR.

if i land somebody i flip the kite over & kick sand on it (that's what i do with mine when i self-land). i'm not standing there while you fartarse around with your bar & leash.
if you're going to be precious about your kite then land it yourself.

what kind of sand do you have in victoria ? Mud ?

i have never heard of sand making a kite dirty . As for wear and tear well as long as there are no foreign objects in the sand i call bollox on that unless you have the same kite for 20 years

You land my kite I will be grateful, flip it over and put sand on it, still grateful.
Stand there holding it, still grateful.
Flip it over and put it down without sand on it, not so grateful.
Seems the Vico's are sensitive about getting sand on there precious kites, must be $hit sand over there??

For our Euro friends (maily the French) I prefer to land the kite, then spin it around with the wingtip flapping violently as they walk up the lines..

They don't ask me again for a landing.
