Yeh you sound fine to get out there and have a go. Most people I know had one lesson which covered rigging, self rescue, quick release, we were on a board riding a bit at the end of a lesson. It really comes down to to the individual though, kite flying, coordination, wind sport experience/ability to see the gusts on the water. Anyone that says fly interstate for a lesson has got to be kidding you!
Always know where your quick release it, if $hit happens you can bail and not get hurt. Check the weather report and keep an eye on any changes.
Search youtube and the progression videos on the net. To reiterate, ALWAYS know where you're safety is and make sure it's not tangled/twisted, sometimes it's not the first thing people think of when they get lofted accidently jumping etc..
If your going to self launch, learn how to do it properly,my advice,if you're got the wind to your back the kite must be on your left or your right, never in front of you or directly downwind, and you need to be at least a few meters into the water when you launch because if you get dragged the water will act as a brake and is softer than a carpark.understand how much wind will cause you to be overpowered with your kite and respect it.keep away from busy areas, don't go out further than you can swim.leaning on a surfboard is easier to begin because of the floatatation will get you up easier and you can paddle it back to the beach if need be.side shore is the best wind to begin because you can sail down wind which is the easiest, and stay right on the shores edge
