So what can it do that a $10 waterproof iphone/samsung case and a GPS app cannot?

I've been using the Suunto GPS watches for years. Currently on the Ambit 2 model. Best GPS watch ever and has way more options than the Rip Curl. There may even be a custom application you can install to track waves as well.

Hi norcom, I’ve been looking at purchasing the Suunto Ambit 2 or 3 but can’t find a picture of what the tracking map looks like after it is downloaded onto the computer. I want to compare it to the Garmin Forerunner 220 tracking map that is in the review jonoistall wrote. Any chance you could post a snapshot of one?

By the way- excellent review jonoistall.

I have an ambit 3 and the maps are pretty accurate. they just overlay lines onto google maps and tells you distance, time, pace at certain points basically anything you want it too, as long as you set the watch up properly it will do everything and more the ripcurl one will do

Here's a review I wrote about the Garmin Forerunner 220 - which I use for Running and Kitesurfing. It's been great.

http://www.kitesurfing.com.au/kitesurfing-waterproof-gps-watch-review-garmin-forerunner-220/

I have a Garmin 910xt use it for kiting, cycling, swimming (it counts laps) and running but I bought originally to track and map the across the bay down-winder of 75km. Also can measure distance traveled while kiting, speeds etc.

It has a great website where you can compare your ranking among cyclists for certain road segments. Good for surfing as well since you always wonder what distance you cover paddling, and what speeds you get on a wave. Not sure it can do wave count though, but you could easily figure that out when you compare paddling vs surfing speed.

Thanks for the feedback on the Suunto guys. Nice to know there are happy users as their quite expensive but their specs look like they cover multi sports pretty compressively.

I know where you’re coming from Richardo however I don’t look at this as a single function watch but it will be my “everything” watch including an everyday watch. Basically, trying to cover everything in one hit so I don’t have to change it each time I do something different

Gets a little confused with kiting but should be good for SUP

LOL! (that's what the kids say, right?)

It's not a live satellite feed, Ricardo. Satellite image could've been taken on a flat day.

this was just a test session on the kite and the watch is not suited for kiting as it gets confused by the constant speed etc, the wave count is based on the algorithym so I'm guessing each run towards the beach it counts as a wave.

Drew, good point. The spot in the photo does have small waves on the two points when the conditions are right, i was mainly mucking around at the point on the left hand side, then did a downwinder to the point on the left side and then tack back up wind

No shark, From what i can tell the red line is your fastest wave/run of the session

KPA are you talking about the Suunto Ambit GPS watch? Assume they use it for kiteboarding?

When you start looking the various reviews of either the Garmin, Suunto or RipCurl it looks like the Rip Curl one is the only watch that is really for the surf. Not really stuffed as to what my heart is doing when I'm out kiting for the day. The Rip Curl watch is the most expensive but the images you can download to your iphone through the Search App look awesome. Its also obviously great of analysing your surfing. So which one should the kids be putting in my Xmas stocking this year??

The Magellan switch up is awesome. I used it for triathlons and tried it out and it's unreal You can upload it to Magellan site or download to apps like strava. Fraction of the cost of most $215 from memory.
good luck

i bought 1 ripcurl tide watch from bcf

it had to be replaced 4 TIMES!! over 6 months. one time it only lasted a freaking week!

my partner didnt get hers from bcf and never got hers replaced at all it broke for her within a month. she did pay half the price i did from bcf then she did off ebay tho.

i highly reccomend everyone avoids ****n ripcurl watches

the "computer" in them would crash freeze lock out etc etc and when reset wouldnt reset all the functions or would just completely brick. not one of them worked properly 100% for even the briefest of periods. theyd either have unreadable light where the screen souldnt display or so many other things. i was amazed. and when i looked into it the problem was global and right across the board. thank god i had a bcf return policy and theyd just swap it out if i had the receipt and box etc

Here is an output from my Garmin watch. Its a bit sad that now if it isn't recorded it didn't happen so I always have to take it with me and if I forget it I feel like something is missing. At least I can honestly say I have had 16 sessions in Nov covering 187km, kind of cool but also quite useless information.

last comment I promise: also check out the sites of Garmin etc, you need to think about support, maintenance software upgrades, they hold all your data and will they be around in the long run? Not pimpin a product but I think Garmin are the market leader here (not sure about Suunto).

I was thinking of getting a Garmin Fenix 2 or the Suunto Ambit 3, I just wanna know if they can give you a live speed so while I'm kiteboarding I can know how fast i'm going. I saw with the Suunto ambit 3 theres a kiteboarding app you can load onto it to also show your height. The only thing is I don't really like the look of the Suunto, prefer the Garmins look, just wondering if anyone has a Garmin fenix2/tactics or a Suunto Ambit 3? And can tell me if it will show live speed while I'm out.

I would not recommend any ripcurl watch, terrible after service, I have the ultimate titanium tide watch, if you want the battery changed you have to send it back to them at it takes about a month to get it back, every 2 years you'll need a new wrist band, I just sent it back to get a new one and been waiting for 7 weeks now for it to come back!

Agree here marty. I have the same Rip Curl watch and I had a number of reliability issues as well as going through several bands. I love the style, functions and my back up support is good but sadly they don’t outweigh the frustration of the negatives, hence why I’m looking at an alternative.

Ironically I decided about 8 months ago “next time this watch plays up I’ll bin it and buy a new watch” b*st*rd thing hasn’t missed a beat since.

I have the Garmin Tactix, and its awesome. You can get lots of data whilst riding, and then review the gps after either on the watch or on PC. As standard the tide charts only come with USA, but you can get tide charts for the rest of the world on the internet and then upload them to the watch. I find the waypoint feature particularly accurate for downwinders in new places etc.

Are you able to view your speed on the watch as your going along like a speedo? Also can the altometer tell you how high each of your jumps are?
