The twin tipper who lost his board I haven't seen since. He used to kite at Brighton. A jovial guy who had long hair and ring through his nose. He used to love doing big boosts on his old c kite. Perhaps that incident was enough for him to jack it all in.
Waaaay off topic, but I was thinking just the other day I haven't seen him around in ages. He was around since the early days where a downwinder meant you and around 6 other kites were visible along the whole coast (if that).
Was a grumpy old man responsible than hasnt smiled for like 30 years? uttering under his breath "fkin **** ktsurfr, nvr usd b lik this is the old days, grrr fkn grrr no respct cud of klld me bin windsrfin since before u born grrrrr ktsf shud b bannd, bldy yuth grrrr"
There's one in every crowd, unfortunately this makes it a problem for everyone on the beach, but don't judge all by the actions of a few, must admit kite surfer mc is pretty hard bunch
Bit off subject, but talk to any experienced kiter ( 5years plus) this has always happened, no cop reports but, why dob someone in, just egg his car later, poo on his windscreen, banana up exhaust, bag of prawns hid carefully can be a loving gift that can last for weeks.
I seem to remember a maniac older windsurfer down in Margs, few years ago, 2002ish.
He at least was straight forward nutter, used to tell kiters if still in water after 4 it was your fault when he hit ya.
This is when poor Margies used to be shared,
surfers-6am to 12
kiters- 12 to 3ish
poleys 3 onwards
But he like all windsurfers back then knew the inevitable, kiting here to stay, frustration for him manifest into acts on all.
Dropping into wave and here comes old mate up the face jumping the wave going out, scare the absolute shet out of ya, wonder if he still down south?(alive)
I'm sure the boys still remember him, could he have come up to Perth or maybe mentoring pupils.

This was kind of why I got into kitesurfing from windsurfing in the first place - kiters were a bunch of kooks who hadn't been doing it very long as the sport hadn't existed very long, so nobody 'owned' it or gave you attitude. I reckon it has got better (maybe strength in numbers), 5-10 years ago it would be routine for polies to adjust their tack and have a go at you. Adds that extra element of excitement to the whole experience!
It does seem like a lot of kiters don't quite grasp the concept of a windsurfer tack though, I see a lot of guys blaze through the windsurfer area at scabs when some guy is trying to line up his tack.
And they may not 'own' that spot but given that we get basically the entire rest of the coastline why not stay the f?,k out?
Where's freeze when ya need him....
Hmmmmm, I've always got on well with the polies. I give em a wave when I pass. I don't care if they wave back or not. If they try to mow me down I just out manoeuver them.
Well that changed a lot of peoples tone didn't it
I am not going to name and shame the assailant, as the court of a public forum has no justice.
I did not witness the actual attack, I was pumping up my kite at the time and I spoke to a very shaken Ads on the beach immediately afterwards. I saw his smashed up board and identified the assailant to him when he was pointed out. I took his version of events at face value, as would anyone. Anyway what difference would it have made if he had got in the way accidentally or even called the bloke 'gimp-boy' for that matter, would it have justified a physical assault?
I don't understand where all this aggression and violence is coming from. Some people say it was ever so, but then you would be blind to have missed the spate of one punch killings, blindings, and maimings in this town at a rate that is unprecedented. Just look at what happened to poor Tauri Litchfield RIP. These aren't fights by in large, just an aggressive individual or individuals, often pumped on roids and meth, angry, disempowered' mentally weak but narcissistic, out looking for an unknown innocent on which to vent his pent up anger. His physical dominance making up for an otherwise hopelessly inadequate sense of self. You can blame the empowerment of women, the media with its culture of self preening celebrity, the crowding of our roads and beaches, the breakdown of social regulation through increase human mobility. You can in fact blame whatever you like but there is still no excuse for physical violence.
Ads did the right thing to take it further, as we as a society needs to actively condemn such behaviour otherwise you might be the next victim of it!

Perhaps that incident was enough for him to jack it all in. Should he be reading this perhaps he could come in and verify the story, but I heard it reliably from several sources.
Waveslave is right that there is no 'windsurfing' area, but good kiters do respect them and do stay out of the poley's way, because we command a lot more space .
To end on an upbeat note........I had a nice little session kiting near Jesper last night, all the other poleys had gone in, so no issue. He got a audience from me for a monster peak he smashed, but then he aerialed out the back. We both laughed as I called him a chicken, but really, it is much easier on a kite, as we don't suffer the same consequences. Nice session ........how it should be.
And to all those guys who criticise those who regularly kite there and can't understand why Brighton attracts a crowd of dedicated kiters and poleys on a short stretch of apparently 'featureless' beach , all I can say is "you cant teach a blind man to see", but we are more than happy that if you all stay away anyway.
You write so beautifully ![]()

this was posted under wa kitesurfing a month back thought it may be of interest as its obviously some communication is needed .............anyway meantime PARTY ON PUNTERS
Smash him in the face with some scaff tube bro and tag up the train on the way home.
A major factor into your beef is the blind spot thru pocket. Obviously us windsurfers can see can see a 40 foot boat but with heavy salt accumulation on the sail vision is distorted and downwind visibility is extremely poor. My guess is he didn't even see you .
KEEP clear . Understand the cognetics of our discipline.

does he has a white falcon station wagon..?
if it is..
he did grab a twin tip and take out to sea .
i miss the quiet days when 4 was a crowd.
still kiting but racing dirt bikes a lot more now.
anyone going to finke .? meet me there..
still go kiting but time seems to fly bye now.
ahhh .. the good old days..haha

ummm is that blind spot a consequence of cataracts, you know being a bit passed it an all!![]()

nice drawing by the way, you appear well versed in the subject matter ![]()

Sorry just trying to prevent further incidents and highlight possible causation factors for a diplomatic resolution. . Its your decision I suggest if you want to be a competent safe kite-surfer you take note and learn. If not join the other 2000 people kooking it up.
I cant even surf at my local been overrun by kooks like yourself.
Setting up kites above pedestrians
The list of your ****whit ****ups is aslong as my arm .
I could right a ****en Novel on you idiots.
Your argument is invalid.
I had a windsurfer go down wind to try and ping me the other day?chased him for a bit but was to much of a girl. ALso my mate had one about 6 weeks ago corner him near the shorey going full tilt my mate tacked last minute windsurfer hits beach going mach 10 suck ****..probably need to confront the douche bag at some point if its the same 1 or 2 guys. If my board got trashed I would be pissed off theres enough accidents out there with out guys deliberatly trying to run you down.

Just wondering how many of you have actually windsurfed??
I had a windsurfer go down wind to try and ping me the other day? Sounds like you got in the way and he didn't see you through his sail.
corner him near the shorey going full tilt my mate tacked last minute windsurfer hits beach going mach 10 Sounds like a 20+ knot day and your mate getting in the way - its not as easy to do a gybe(180 degrees) on a windsurfer
There is a big issue of the number of kiters mowing lawns at scarborough in a small 100M stretch of beach -ITS A BIG OCEAN. Kite up wind a bit more along towards city beach.
Agreed. The only thing threads like these do is to build division between kiters and windsurfers. We both enjoy wind based water sports, I never understood all the hate.

Ding Dong ... similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago at Applecross . Guy trying to run us down... its pretty easy to know if its an accident or deliberate .. you don't need to be a windsurfer to work it out . In our case the guy did 3 runs each time trying to take out kitesurfers , each time pointing down wind and aiming , ... not cool !
The guy had eye contact with me the whole time then laughed as he faded me from getting a great wave. I can clearly remember his face so will be keeping eye out for him. My mate said the same thing as windsurfer was also yelling at him. I have windsurfed and its not an easy sport allot harder to get good than kitesurfing..but this is no excuse for being a complete cock head.
Its a fact that guys down winding will be around windsurfers while they are passing through..if this happens to me again I will be chasing it up on the beach..I used to surf onshore at Mettams etc and had to put up with windies through the line up all the time?

That was probably me - i remember the incident and thought this might come up here.
Unfortunately we have to bear away quite a bit more than the kites to stay on the plane on the way out - by virtue of not having 1st and 2nd gear like the kites do. I can totally see it from your point of view as it looks like we are bearing away at you - but its the angle you need to sail to stay mobile unfortunately.
By us all being in the windsurf zone together we invariably end up with these overlaps of understanding.
The mega downwind sweep and short wind swell makes it even harder to get going on a pole board. It was simply a matter of misjudgement on my part - you were pretty much doing all the right things really and got a VERY close buzz. apologies from my end. I felt bad afterwards for sure - i wasnt really laughing at you but more a good natured shriek at the situation. But can see your interpretation.
- but i do offer an unconditional apology here and now.
This is possibly another reason to have a voluntary exclusion zone as many of the kite guys dont understand the different angles we have to sail to get out and vice versa -sometimes we are going nearly parallel to the waves to keep up pace and avoid knock backs.
When you take all this uncertainty - and then mix the two sports together going through the zone stuff has a tendency to just happen.
I am not in favour of having regulated zones - i think it can be done less formally - none of the areas are particularly great for wave form -so this isnt about exclusive access to some amazing beach break (cue waveslave comment) but i think kites and windsurfers in the surf is just way too confusing for everyone to ride safely together - and there will be mistakes on both sides - see my error of judgement above. We are dealing with humans here who will make mistakes.
Regarding the topic of this thread -I am not defending the actions of someone deliberately running over a kiter - that is plainly wrong - but there is a real sense of frustration among the windsurf crew at scarbs with the amount of kites coming through. This adds potential fuel for situations to occur.
Most of the guys on surfboards know what is going on , but we have twin tippers boosting through and landing in bad spots among the crew , riderless boards coming though too ,consistently downed kites washing through the break and many ruined wave set ups (you might only get 3 good ones in a session - the banks are that bad right now) - often its the "visiting" twin tip guys that just dont understand the flow that head out right into the middle of someones bottom turn set up - that any surfer could see was going to happen a mile off
This frustration is probably also borne out of the terrible state of the banks , downwind sweep and backwash.
To be honest- and having kited for 5 years back in the day - kiting is probably a better fit for the current set up as you can time bottom turns and reos with so much more flexibility. When the banks are half decent it all gets a lot easier for everyone. That isnt likely to happen till next spetember though..
I always seem to come back to Niall's riding at this spot- i dont think anyone on windsurfers is coming close to what he is able to pull off in such atrocious conditions - the big aerials are awesome and i give out an internal cheer whenever i see one. Quite a few of the windsurfer crew sail it well too - i just cant see how it can all happen in one area without further mishaps as humans just cant always make the right decision at the right times. Its a pretty small stretch of beach - literally 200 m if that.
By us all being in the windsurf zone together we invariably end up with these overlaps of understanding.
(cue waveslave comment)
Downwinders will kill the village.
Is it audacious for swarms of kiters to enter an established wave zone unannounced on mass doing downwinders, ?
(Reflex calls it the windsurf zone),
taking their fat share of waves and then zooming off when they feel they have overstayed their welcome,
leaving the regular riders in their wake.
Is it the easy, lazy and greedy way to chase waves on a kite ?
Is it a bit pussy, anti-social and one-dimensional ?
Is it just plain rude ?
I'd hate for it to happen at my local pointbreak.
I feel sorry for all you metrosexual city dwellers fighting over 100m of water while some of us get sick of kiteing cross-off waves by ourself's ringing around the couple of locals trying to find someone else to share the clean wave session with..
I don't think there's any excuse for behavior like that. Take it up with the dogs. They might sort him out for all who want too enjoy the water!
