Howdy all.

Im damn keen to get away from this miserable Victorian weather. Although we have wind, it's not the warmest of places. Getting quite tired of racing hypothermia to the car after each session.

So..... I am strongly considering heading somewhere north, somewhere warmer, somewhere with nice beach's .
What are your thought people?
Where is the best place to go kiteboard, live in northern Aus ??

Give me your advice. Would like to hear from anybody else that has moved up there.
Not sure on short term or long term move. See how it goes when I get there.

If you feel like commenting, leave me some details about the place?
State ad town
Size of town.
Local beaches.
Etc.

Thanks all.

Port Douglas. 8 mile beach. You walk 50 meter from the hotel to the area where people kite or from the car park to the beach is 10 steps. 10m kite most days but some days you need smaller or 14 meter kites.

Yeah sorry mate, it was more wishful thinking than helpful advice! I sympathize with you being from Melbourne and after just having got out of the water and now I can't find my um.... Well guys will know what I mean!

To be honest man anywhere north will be better, consistent wind or not!

When your up north
No wind = at least your warm
Wind = hours and hours on the water with no hypothermia.
Either way it's a win!

Don't be to fussy, there is no place on earth that is nice and warm every day that also has consistent wind everyday. I hope you get to the place your looking for and I'm jealous you've got the choice! Good luck.

Not sure of your resources or how long you have before you need to settle but if I were you I’d start at Cairns and work your way down the Qld coast until you get to the Sunshine Coast and then pick the place you want to settle in.

Its winter so accommodation will be reasonable and I reckon you could do it in a few weeks. I’m sure this forum would help you out with the areas kite boarding beaches so you can at least have a look what their like even if there’s no wind at the time. Or thinking about it, if Cairns is where you think you’ll want to be maybe start at the Sunny Coast and work your way up...

Us Mexicans from time to time have a brain freeze because the water is about -300 at the moment. We also get qld envy because you guys are warm all year round! We can be a grumpy shivering mess at times. Don't take it personally it's just that your water is a bit warmer, and cleaner, and nicer, and bluer, and wetsuitlessier, and.....

You get where I'm cumin from

I've been to Port Douglas, and is a great destination, but it is flat water only? I think you need to hire a boat to get offshore to the waves.

How about Yorkeys Knob? Is there wind at this time of year? The sunshine coast has some waves/downwinders.

If you want a kite holiday don't do yorkeys mate. Worst place for kiting in Queensland. I don't understand how the locals even bother. I've spent about 7 weeks there over 5 different trips, and this trip was the first time I've kited, I got 2 very gusty underpowered 14m sessions in 10 days. Check out Ants kite safari, or archers point if you just want some kiting in FNQ

Not trying to be a whinger , it's not the cold water so much, I have been getting wet in winter for 15 years plus.
I just need a seachange.

Thankyou all for your helpful hints.
Ewan (wont say your surname for your privacy) thanks for the tips on yorkey's, I was looking into accommodation opposite.
Appreciate your input & will take your advice as I'm aware of your experience kiting.

At this point it's looking like 4-6 weeks away.
Sunshine coast and slowly working my way further north. No rush of course.

As a Cairns local I can honestly suggest that if you are going to spend coin for a kite head up to Ants Kitesurfari and don't waste it on Cairns/port Douglas.

Yorkeys Knob is my local and I love it when it fires but that has been few and far between. Locals are saying worst year ever (I'm sure I have said that every year) but the reality is it really is a fickle spot. Seabreeze will be showing green arrows hanging out of our ring pieces only to be sitting on the beach talking crap as usual.....

Anyone who has been to Cairns for a kiting holiday will agree......

For about the same price as your airfares, accommodation, food at Cairns etc. etc. you can be at Ants Kitesurfari and be on a 7m kite rather that sitting at Yorkies talking crap with the locals hoping the wind will come in. Ant includes everything included as transfers from the airport, accomodation, food, kites pumped, downwinders etc etc etc. Ask anyone who has been.

Ragz, I recommend stopping at Agnes Water/ 1770 and Yeppoon on your way through Central Qld – their quiet and laid back. Here’s some links to contacts that I’m sure will help you with beach advice. Enjoy your trip through “God’s Country”

Just got back from port douglas, pulled the pin early
Had a shocker,no wind.Beautiful location and etc.
Just spent the day kiting back at my local with a 4/3 wetsuit and boots.
Big grin on my face again.Think hard about blowing your money up north especially as the forcast down here is looking good.
Get a good wetsuitsuit .booties and gloves and get out there..

One good thing about the Cairns area is if you don't mind wearing a stinger suit you can kite pretty much all year round , though it does depend on prevailing SE winds . The water is always warm and the locals are friendly.spend two weeks having a look around and make up your own mind is my advice . I was born in Cairns and have lived here most of my life , I love it here !

You wanna be going to WA.
Wind all day, every day.
Plus they have a higher number of better looking women.
You'd be crazy not to go.

Wa is pretty big, yeah.
My favourite spots on the west coast is around Ocean Reef, Hillarys to be exact.
The locals are very friendly, some even offer to pump up your kite for you.
Bring your friends, as there isn't many people that kite around there. The more the merrier.
Hope this is clear...?

It's pretty much all been said, but as InTheLoop said mate, there are tonnes of spots to choose from. Just going to one beach because everyone says it's good or good on certain times of the year is denying yourself the possibilities.
I've moved up here from Melbourne for the same reason as you. I could not stand the cold anymore and changing in and out of wetties was wasting time and adding to the misery.
We're now in Townsville and I have to say, Pallarenda and the kiting community up here have been amazing. Sure, you get your off weeks (like now in Winter) but generally the winds here are pretty consistent 15kn + for around 10 months of the year. Water is warm. Stingers are meh, especially in winter. And locals are smiling. Besides, when there is no wind, there is SUP and cycling, motorcross, sailing, diving, The Strand, eye candy, etc etc. a lot more to see here man.
But as I said, there are also heaps of other spots which I have yet tried out, so if I get my fill from just one spot up here, then imagine how often you could be kiting if you travel around a bit more?
Move up here mate! You won't regret it.

Stralis, you are correct that WA is a big place, but you know unfortunately the sharks there are also very big

Whereas around the Illawarra there are hardly any sharks, which is just another reason why it's such a great place.

Also the kiters there love to have Europeans coming to town, because they like to learn new languages

They are so keen in fact that I have heard one of them will actually let European kiters stay at his house! He will also show you all of the secret spots and best kite beaches and if you don't have the right kite size, he will give you his to use

Yes, they are much friendlier there, it's a great place not at all like WA
