Cant say to much people as a request by his family, as his parants do not yet know as they are over sea's atm. Did my best to keep the news reporters hanging with no info and the other kiter there sorry for been rude as you didnt know I was the one that saved him and the reporter would have fished info off you.

But he is in a bad way with serious head injures fractured jaw and in a induced coma.
He was wearing a helmet at the time, and is a experinced kiter and was a instructor for a few months until he decide he rather be out there. wind strength was only about 15-25knts at the time on a 9m

He's very very lucky to be alive.

People please do not kite alone he was lucky I was there because when you knock yourself out you cant hit your safteys and its not a good place to be face down been drag by your kite unconscious. It took me about 2 to 3mins to get to him and a further 20min that felt like hours to get him to the foreshore.

kite safe people

Update, spine and neck seem to look fine in CT scans, they are going to try and start to bring him out of his induced coma on friday. Looks like it maybe be a long recovery.

Didnt realise I had my gopro on cought the whole thing. My wife is in the cops and she watched it so she used to this sort of thing while I was at work, Brought her to tears but she was able to get accurate times of events from it.

Kite safe guys

Wow what a legend.

What was the mistake? just too close to the jetty and went long on a jump? kite to big and overpowered? simple bad luck?

With respect for his recovery, the family, and the rescuer - the reason people like details is it helps us avoid the same mistakes. It drives us to better ourselves and the sport.

Without knowing what happened the educational experience is zero.

At some point I hope those involved can share.

Sad to hear, hopefully he recovers fully, but I agree with gunny11, would like to know so I can learn.

Apart from learning from any mistakes or equipment issues or gusts that may have caused the accident, which of course I think is an important lesson for us all, is there any actual update on how the guy is going health wise?

I hope I'm not the only one who would really like to know and I hope that he is at least more stable and fingers crossed that he can start some sort of road to recovery albeit that it's probably going to be a long one....

If anyone has info it would be nice to get an update.....

Hi Guys he is stable, but still in intensive care. I'm told there is movement in legs and arms time to time and one eye is opening and closing, they are still try to bring him out of the coma.

Other good news is it seems he understands where he is and recognises family members voices, last night his mother who asked if he was hungry answer was a faint, YES

Still early days but this is great news

Thanks gtease, it must be tough for family, especially a mum seeing her boy going through this really tough time. As hard as it must be, the movements in his arms and legs and his eye, combined with recognition of family is really positive. Long tough road ahead and I've been there (not as severely and motorbike accident not a kite, but none the less my parents were told to say there last goodbyes after my 7th operation), so I can say for certain that positive well wishes mean a lot at times like this!

Stay positive and all the best to him and his family!

I will second that comment about not kiting alone!

I was knocked unconscious after a fall in shallow water (hit the back of my head on sand) and was lucky there was another kiter close by who reached me quickly and pulled me up out of the water. I was unconscious and being dragged face down through the water by my kite still attached. Could have been allot worse if there was no one around!

Hope this guy is getting better.

One thing I've taken from this thread, definitely wearing a helmet!

Hope he is making a good recovery and well done to the rescuer.
