A boat also cut through the field about halfway through the pack, I surely was going to win if it didn't do that
Was such a great race. Such a fun day.
There are a hundred past stories from past racers in every L2L race of kite tangles on beach, kite tangles on the start line, random pleasure, dive, commercial boats just cutting people off in the middle of gague roads, huge container ships just parking in front of fleet before race and creating massive wind shadows, broken bones in feet, - etc, etc that's just part of racing in the L2L -
sorry and I forgot to mention the weed, the most common comment after the L2L "I crashed 3,4,5,6,7,8 times because of the weed other wise I would have won. Everyone has been robbed in the L2L.
All kite racers started at 2.30 sharp and then finished in order after Ollie 1st over the finish line in 22.07minutes and that's, that -
Its an open ocean race through an active shipping lane for 19km - that's the great thing about this race - it has REAL BIG HAZARDS in a big, deep, blue, beautiful Indian ocean.
This is what makes the L2L such an epic world class race - and very, very hard to win ![]()
Could not agree more Johonno, From the Ballot to the Bar after...... there is so much that goes into this race so many factors that come into play from the big stuff you mentioned above to the little stuff you sweat the night before like, did I put my fins in the bag? how fresh are the batteries in my stop watch? are my foot-straps that should have been changed out ages ago going to last? Should I really drink 4 Redbulls before the start?
My experience at my second L2L was awesome. I made my mistakes on the day, cursed myself half way across for lack of training miles and still came across the line stoked. Thanks Tim and the Crew everyone that volunteered on the day, everyone who raced and those who came down to spectate.
But seriously tho that weed! if I didn't stack 8 times I would have won for sure ![]()
I'm listed as a DNS but I never payed and I emailed them saying I couldn't compete when payments we due so not sure if those DNS's are accurate as placements may have been re-allocated with new race numbers?
Though I did receive bag tags in the mail..............

And the amazing photos from Peta: aerialphotographywa.com/red-bull-lighthouse2leighton-kite-race/
Struth, that Flysurfer really is massive. It looks like it could eat those other kites in the 7th photo. I thought it was just a perspective thing.
Looking at the results only 93 Finished and 1 DNF.
The other 21 had either DNC or DNS? Why so many???
Gutted not to get a spot ........ then read so many wasted spots!
Anyway Congrats to ALL who finished and the top bullets.
Hope to get a start next year!!

Yeol, 9 did not actually start and collect flares ready to race and for a variety of reasons. A few were DSQ also for not crossing the line correctly (at the finish).
* That's racing * … as we say around here!

I had a decent start but I decided to chose a different line from all the other racers and it actually paid off!
Unfortunately I didn't find yet a video or a picture where I am in...I remember screaming in front the camera at the finish line
when I understood to be the first of my division!
Thanks again it will be a great be in again next year and do a better time!

Luca
