Thanks everyone for yr suggestions so far.
Bloody work sprung it on me a bit late and google flights, qantas, shyscanner etc showed flights as still available. Trap for young players though its not live to availability, and as soon as u choose the price goes mental. Ended up with poor choice of flights. 44hr return and to get the missus on the same one was $4200. Probably clise to a grand more than it had to be. But its ao rare for me to be going over school hols and my wife is a teacher so its worth it for the timing. Flying in to amsterdam, week in eindhoven for work then fly out from rome close to two weeks later after the work week finishes. As the sun sets at 10pm i think we should try and do maastricht for one or two evenings ex eindhoven. Wife can do close things.each day while i work then dinner in evenings etc. Amsterdam on the day we arrive. So come the weekend we can train to paris for a few days. Then i was thinking vienna. Castles, hallstaat, hitlers nest. Hang in that area. I hear salzburg is good. Then either overnight train or fly to venice before rome for a few days before we go. After a week of dutch food ill be keen for some french and then some nice italian to finish after german fare which i suspect is like dutch (not great) . As for what i like i guess just what europe can offer that other places cant - hence castles histrical stuff. Beautifull little towns with cobblestines and flowers and motes etc.
Cant see how to fit giethorn in which im dissapointed about. Maastricht def worth it and def want to go back to though.

Well than you made a good choice with vienna.

I would also very highly recommend Salzburg (Austria), birthplace of Mozart.

Salzburg is a smaller city (150.000 people) vs Wien which has almost 2 million people living there.
