My worst buy.....by proxy![]()
Last Tuesday I sent the Sandwichmaker [who I love dearly] to get rid of the crappy supercats that were on the front of her car.
Even though they had well over half their tread left they have proved hopeless in the wet, losing traction at the slightest hint of moisture.
I don't have a sanwich maker. Mine is a curry cooker. ![]()
I have been running supercats (second set now) on her Corolla RV for years and we swear by them. Never a problem in the wet.
First bought a landrover lemon
Few years later bought another expecting better.. Doh another lemon.
I will not post dollars lost will make me weap thinking about it.
Note to self dont do it a third time. Hmm the new rangie looks nice![]()
Yup....me too!
Bought a Series 1 Discovery in 1992. Everything went wrong from day 1. Bits fell off, broke down or didn't work. Went through a stage when I couldn't even turn the engine off. Was about to trade it and found out that they had brought out the next Series $10k cheaper. Always good to know that you've lost $10k overnight!
Japanese for me!!!
Im now in a jap 4x4.... It works
Had to laugh about the samsung washing machines as I have got one one of those models too. Tech came out to do the upgrade and said it was mostly tropical type environments were they have the problems, swerved a bullet there!
bought a Starboard Flare pro kids for my son
blessed thing snapped in two after a month....
so I recycled it : LED garden lamps
When I was 14 i worked for my fathers building company for two weeks over the school holidays labouring to purchase myself a cheap $1200 chinese 125cc dirt bike aka thumpster. The salesmen at the shop told me and my very worried mother that my body would break before the motorbike would.
1 week later i was doing a tabletop jump and the rear shock when through the seat straight into my arse. I was not impressed but my mother was.. do not buy chinese crap..

Bought a second hand Pajero that i thought would still be covered by new car warranty , on online auction only to find when i picked it up that it had 90000km on the clock but had not had the service records in the owners manual to verify its warranty.
Anyway on the way home it sciezed the turbo due to lack of oil and it had silastic stuck in the oil supply line to the turbo.
Three thousand dollars later , for a new turbo, had to be genuine because of new style , and a month later the timing chain breaks , because a previous mechanic had left the chain tensioner and chain guide loose.
Engine is still out of the car due to Mitsubishi Australia unable to supply suitable head gasket and timing gear for camshaft.
(have been waiting 3 weeks for parts now)
Never again will i buy a car without inspecting it prior to purchase.
Aand never online auction .
this dumb tablet that like was by a japanese company and like it had a japanese menu nd like 2 days later a white screen came up and this annoying beeping sound like a non stop beeeeeep that wouldnt shut up and i threw it away in the trash ( with that sound cauz it wouldnt turn off)
How was school for you?

Even though they had well over half their tread left they have proved hopeless in the wet, losing traction at the slightest hint of moisture.
Told the Sandwichmaker [who I love dearly] to get a pair of Sumitomo's to replace them as the pair of Sumi's on the car had proven to be waaaaaay better.
Came home to find my dearly beloved Sandwichmaker had gone to the wrong tyre shop in Balcatta - and had replaced the old dodgy supercraps with new dodgy supercraps![]()

So, any seabreezers out there that want a pair of 185/60r14 supercats, that have a grand total of 18km of use on them - they are yours for a $50 donation to RFDS.
Alternatively - if you are a perpetually broke student [aren't they all?
] show us your student ID and the tyres are all yours.

How old were the tyres? Rumour has it that tyres harden up as they age, lose traction in the wet but last longer. I've heard of taxi drivers who, to get maximum milage, let new tyres cure for a year or two before putting them into service .
(Same goes for windsurfer boards. How easy is it to ding a new board. Once they are a few years old and unloved you can throw them around, drop them, bang them into posts etc without getting further damage.)
Excluding stocks.
Landrover Freelander......... was by far the worst purchase I've ever made.
BMW K1300R.........
How old were the tyres? Rumour has it that tyres harden up as they age, lose traction in the wet but last longer.
The previous Super-cats were purchased January 2013 to replace 2 x borderline legal OE tyres.
The brand new 'cats handled worse than the worn out tyres they replaced.
The other 2 OE tyres were replaced with Sumitomo's September 2013.
We found the Sumitomo's were far and away better for handling and braking on wet or dry, bitumen or gravel.
I did a lot of experimenting with pressures and swapping from front to back.
It didn't matter what pressures I ran - the Sumi's made the 'cats look like junk.
I don't know if it is the rubber compound or tread pattern - or a combination of both.
Can't be the price - as it is only $2 more for a pair of Sumitomo's.
Can't be the incredibly huge horsepower [I wish]
that the car has - as both brands of tyre are getting the same use [abuse]
So, as soon as the wet weather arrived this time, I decided to ditch the 'cats - even though they had oodles of tread left.
Due to a series of misunderstandings, [not entirely her fault]![]()
my wife had the wrong tyres fitted.

How old were the tyres?
dug out the old receipts to check.
The super-cats were purchased January 2013, and there was over 50 000km on them when I had them replaced last week - and they had well over half of their useable tread left.

I bought a Jeep
And?
By asking this I can deduce that you've never owned a Jeep.
If you had, you would know.
Just tell him...
"It's a jeep thing... you wouldn't understand"

Many cars, like others the worst phone ever a Samsung, small baby clothes- had giant baby, windsurfing lessons - turns out It was harder than it looked, although I havent given up, anything I purchased in Phuket - didnt last, a pair of really nice high heels - way to high wore once on my birthday last year binned them a few days later as I stacked it embarassingly twice in them that night.
Greg Webber Gutter Lover - no projection down the line at all. How does a board not go in fat, hollow Or walls waves? Piece of the proverbial.
Kite Surfing lessons - between work, geography, surfing and family I didn't get the winds or time to reinforce any skills picked up. Related, kite board and kites. Except one of the kites got swapped for my first longboard so that was alright and one of the kite boards finished up contributing to an eight foot semigun.
A VW Passat. Engineered obsolescence. In every single part.
A Bachelor of Science degree
Is that not something you earn rather than buy??

Yeah...but I still had to pay for tuition etc and if I take into account the Opportunity Cost then I could have invested that time and money in training for what I now do.

From what I have read many uni grads never end up being employed in the field they studied but the research says they still benefit from the achievement by way of intellectual development and the discipline. A bit hard to get one's head around I suppose.
Out of curiosity, what do you do now??
Oil and gas well completions. Basically if you can add up, subtract, have reasonable comprehension and can think things through you are a candidate. In other words, finish year 10. I have a commerce degree as well but I don't enjoy my major...I unwisely did it when I was straight out of school because it seemed a sure path to making a decent living, gave lots of surf time etc. Life is good though.....glass is half full etc. Travelling for work has taught me that I am lucky to have an education. EDIT. I guess my point is I spent quite a lot of time and money on formal qualifications that I didn't really need to end up with a job that anyone with a year 10 education could succeed at.
