Seems so bizarre. I get that it was a sensitive issue in the distant past, but in 2020 it's such a non issue or is it?

AFL is so strange on how they handle and respond to social issues.

Homosexuals, women, aboriginals, muslims, cross-dressers don't realy fit into the game yet. Still novelties!

Please note: stupid, racist, sexist replies will be IGNORED and posters will be BANNED

will be BANNED. are u adriano? u sound like a pompous flog so 2 + 2.

goes to show just how brave ian roberts was coming out as gay in the NRL, years earlier and in an even more bogan sport popular in a far more bogan part of the country (roberts played for the cowboys ffs.) harder to be a gay in nth qld than in Melbourne - everyone is gay there. most victorian men seem to be a bit fruity if u ask me.
seriously though roberts probably saved lives. its a shame no AFL players have thr courage. bunch of anthem sitting latte dring jumping sooks

There's been a few from memory, 28 or so. Strangely they all played for Fremantle.

Well I will respond to the at least the post albeit we all smell a Trojan horse.
aboriginals have been a big part of the AFL and indeed the VFL. They have a whole round dedicated to celebrating their incredible contribution to the game. And Christ their have been some amazing indigenous players. Women have their own competition and Infact I know a lot of teenage girls playing the sport and they love it. Their are definitely muslims (and open about it) playing the game, and some bloody good players to.
The openly homosexual players ... well you got me on that one. Their is an X player/coach cross dresser (I'm not sure what he identifies with specifically so excuse me with the limited description.

but focussing on the aboriginals players to highlight how ignorant / and most likely the troll intention of your stupid post, they are an enormous part of the AFL and I would say categorically are more identified, respected and celebrated than any other code period.
so now go away you imbecile.

Bizarrely, although a strong lobby group only 2-3% or so of the general population actually identify as homosexual.

You got 18 top level teams with 30 odd players so just over 500 peeps so you would expect about 10-15 homosexuals

But given the Bloke culture you would expect 90% of these to get rubbed out before under 18's so in reality there are probably only a couple of current top level players that identify as homosexual.

So simple answer unless you are really asking why more people aren't gay or why the bloke culture is predominant in contact sports?

Maybe because nobody cares anymore if they do come out of the closet & if they do it just comes across as attention seeking.

if 2 or 3 percent are gay and the 10-15 gay guys number is correct, (for a general population) then maybe halve that for the effeminate style gay blokes that wouldnt gravitate to or play football. That only leaves a small number and u would think it would be a long hard road to get to the top being a gay bloke in a football club maybe there is only a few.

Majority of the West has moved past this archaic taboo. Don't reckon there is much of a closet in the 21st century, but I suppose there are those who have a particular interest viewing gay footy players exit wardrobes?

Indigenous pop makes up approx' 3-3.5% of total population...

This population accounts for 10% of current ALF players.

They bat well above their average and their isn't many things more exciting then seeing these highly skilled individuals do their miraculous stuff on the field.

...let me tell you what's happening in the younger generation for all you X/baby boomer (mainly) biggots.

My daughter who is 13, has had three friends "come out" in the past week, one boy, one girl - who consider themselves gay and one who is Bisexual. That's in the past week. Been plenty in the last year or so. And good on em'.

The generation coming up is far more accepting, tolerant and those that are what they are, feel far more confident in saying so.

For the rest of us idiots who ask dumb questions about players sexuality... be a better world when we are finally gone and all the old ideas with us.

How come Korean players weren't included in the list.
Peter Bell played AFL at top level for some years and made "all Korean" every year he played according to Pete

How come the Qld and NSW RL teams are being referred to as Maroons and Blues? Some kind of Rainbow Nation thing? I thought the correct terms were Cockroaches and Cane Toads.

tokenism at its worst. a loss leader fact of life PR bill for the codes because their players are too mysoginistic and rapey. Its
about as interesting as the special olympics.
Also they need to stop referring to the womens' cricket as "the aussies". its misleading.
you hear on the news "and the aussies beat india today" so u rush over but they're talking about vigaro. the 5 minutes allocated to sports summary is hardly the place to talk about obscuruites like womens cricket (vigaro) and other novelties like bog snorkellng etc
i dont believe that the australian cricket team has a gender rule. if a woman was good enough she could make the team. That team can be referred to as "the aussies". anything else is a sub team not fit for the minimal time in the news highlights. im all for letting them play, but their air time should be dictated on popularity.
the c grade over 50's mixed soccer comp in albury woodonga doesnt make the news or free to air broadcast because no one gives a fxck. Its the same with womens cricket. Stop pretending people care. Let their lesbian partners and parents stream it online if they're interested

it occurred to me the other day (and I have no idea why)... that an accomplished women's bats-person, could one day/soon-enough hold their own in say the Australian Mens cricket team. I'm not sure if that has any merit, nor have a looked into it, but surely as a comparative touch player - like a 3rd drop or something - someone who places the ball and whose job is too keep their wicket and provide partnerships...why not? If you are not needing to crack the ball over the boundary line surely a female cricketer with exquisite skill and timing could play this role?

Bowling...nah, too many physical differences there (unless they were one in a million - out of this world skill wise), but batting...why not?

and I'd be totally cool with that. If ya good enough, ya good enough.

yeah i dont think so. theyre still shxt at batting. they're hitting balls bowled by women. the female australian soccer team played the newcastle boys under15 soccer in a friendly and got smashed 7 nil. theres a lot of talk about how good they are at mens sports, but its PR

maybe you are right...be interesting to see how the very best cope with a first class male bowling attack. What's her name ...(Needed to look it up) - Elyse Perry. Soccer is a different thing surely, physical strength, agility, speed are all massive factors in that sport.

But batting... its all technical, skill based. As I said they may not be able to hit many boundaries but could be a decent touch player.

Funny story: My 14 yr old daughter umpired a lightning carnival of sorts recently - for Year 6 students. She did really well and was chosen to umpire the Boys final...but that's not the point of the story.

She says "the boys were hitting boundaries, taking catches, some great run outs...was fun. But the girl teams were totally hopeless."

THEN my wife goes "yeh the girls are useless"....

So I am standing there thinking " sh1te, should I say something here about equality and respect or whatever crap modern males have to bang on about now"...

So as usual (over most things) I just said nothing whilst they continued their conversation.

Now my daughter wasn't being sexist; as she's a go getter straight A dux type - plays good netball, plays backyard cricket and well when the lads are at it....and god help you if you say anything misogynist... she was purely talking about the cricket. What she observed purely on a physical level.

Anyhow confusing times.... I got no answers.
