It is an absolute joke. Considering the public health system is so good. My mate blew his shoulders. Had the first OP private. After the insurance paid he still had a 7k gap. Next shoulder went public. Had the exact same OP for $0. Only had to wait 3 months.

I'm booked in with for the same OP through public. The max waiting time is 1 year. If your can hold out. I would recommend it.

The private health insurers won't want to hear that. Only a 3 month wait and free! My god, how could the government let that happen?? Some poor CEO somewhere is looking at a new car and re-thinking the options.

Its only a waste if u don't use it. I had it for 3 months & broke my right knee cap, best of everything
no waiting, 22nd of dec, operation all wired up, crutches lessons & home lunch time the 24th, xmas eve.
Asked the specialist at 1 of the many app with him & he said its about 12000. cost me nothing until I been
to physio 10 times then had to start paying. i'll pay for next 5 yrs & not complain.

Never had health insurance either always been well looked after in the public system when I've done myself a mischief, had a 10 day stay with acouple of days in icu at royal Perth hospital 2 yr ago full respect to health workers.

Just had one ear operated on for surfers ear exostosis and the other ear in 3 weeks time, both ears will take less than 6 weeks from the time of the first consult to the operation in the public system which is fast turnaround.

Evil Panda You should have had private insurance, Medicare is not private, Medibank is.
Hardcarve1 that one op for your wife is roughly 25 years worth of premiums in one op I think your already behind $

A typical operating theatre costs 10k per hour to have ready for surgery. That is before you factor in the cost of Surgeon, Anesthesiologists and any single use medical instruments required....some of which are freaking expensive. Medicine is an expensive business.

How do you think it feels for someone like my Dad who has held some form of self funded medical insurance for 63 years? Sure...his premiums have changed with changes in family circumstances, but the very time in life it is good to carry cover is when the insurance starts to become more and more expensive as a proportion of income. There are a lot of older Australians facing this same conundrum after paying many, many tens of thousands of dollars in premiums and through shear luck or sensible health management over a lifetime haven't had to claim much at all.

The idea of setting up a self financed emergency health fund based upon a mortgage offset is looking more and more appealing every day.
