Can you make hand sanitiser from methylated spirits? Ingredients on bottle say Ethanol solution

Make sure you add water. 70% alcohol + 30% water is a lot more efficient at destorying the virus apart than 100% alcohol.

I am curious, how do you know that?

My father used to apply metho, neat, to sores and scrapes. It was a painful upbringing! I was mentioning this to a work colleague whose father is a doctor and he said something similar, that you need to add water to make it more effective.

That's interesting and could potentially save me a bit as I go through quite a lot sterilising my mushroom grow room.

I was watching some utube vids on making hand sanitizer and one mentioned Ethanol when you can't get isopropyl alcohol, the label on meths says Ethanol solution, it's interesting the Doc said you need to add water, as that's how you get rid of water in jerry cans etc, put in some meths and swill it around so it must absorb the water.
I know MIneral Turpentine (Turps ) is the nasty one for your hands.

Okay, here it is, the reason why you need to add water to ethanol for it to kill viruses, and the fact it gets rid of water in your petrol tank is actually part of it.

Water and oil/grease don't mix. Soap has this useful property that part the soap molecule attracts water, the other side of the molecule attracts grease. So, add some soap or detergent and you can get oil or grease to dissolve in water.

Similarly, with alcohol, you can use it to get water to dissolve in petrol. Most of you probably know the trick to add some metho to your petrol tank if you suspect it may have some water in it.

So, the way soap destroys the coronavirus is similar to how it dissolves grease in water. Your not just washing it off your hands, you are actually destroying the virus by pulling it apart in the presence of water. And it doesn't need anti-bacterial soap to do it, just any plain old soap or detergent is stripping the virus apart in water.

Alcohol does a similar thing. You would have read you need at least 60% alcohol....but here's the real kicker...100% alcohol is no good. You actually need the water present for the alcohol to strip the virus apart, so once you start going over 70% alcohol concentration, it becomes less effective. Being mixed with water also reduces the rate of evaporation, so it is in contact with the virus on your hands for longer too.

How do I know this? I read it on the internet of course.

Here's one source, but there are a heap of similar stories if you search.

I did a brief search for isopropyl alcohol last night. I've not used it as it is so expensive. Roughly $25 / 500ml in Bunnings from memory which is why I've always used metho.

I found some on EBay at $56/litre but they'd run out of stock. I'll take another gander today.

Take one square of tiolet paper. Poke a hole in the middle. Insert finger through hole and wipe as required with finger. Grasp paper with other hand and wrap around the soiled finger and wipe clean.

One role of bog paper should last a family for a while and a good money saver as well.

I paid $30 for 5 litres, including delivery to my door.

Don't ever buy it from Jaycar or bunnings, they'll rob you blind. Instead, whenever you want one of those things that is expensive in the hardware or hobby store, find an industry that uses it by the truck load, and buy it from their suppliers. In this case, the beauticians use it to do nails.

Went to get some metho from Bunnings, hardly any there. The 20 litre one were all gone, my Bunnings did have a couple of 4 litre ones, I grabbed them, there was a few 1 litre bottles left. I imagine they will go quick too. I looked online to see other store stock and pretty much all the Bunnings were out of 20 and 4 litre metho, only 1 litre bottles left and many were low in stock.

I'll try some recipes for hand sanitizer using the metho soon. But, as mentioned above, soap is good or better. So I'll throw in a Jerry can of water in the car so I can wash my hands with soap anywhere. Still want and need hand sanitizer though.

It is getting crazier by the day at the shops. If you have not started topping up your food pantry already, start tomorrow. Do not need to go nuts, just make sure you have full food pantries. If it doesn't all blow over in a couple of weeks it will only get massively worse. There will be a lot of desperate people out there, don't be them.
