^^^ Gazuki and unfortunately that sh!t glorifying G life and fights etc is leading to the problems we see in entertainment areas.
Socially corrosive trash.
They should all be shot.

Tons of good stuff andalso..

The toughest guy I ever had the privilege of sparing would block attacks with his fists. Your hands, feet, shins and arms were his primary targets before the head shots came in. A truly tough basted. But I learnt a lot.

That reminds me of one thing I was told long also (a phrase to teach by)

Don't block - STRIKE at their limb that is coming toward you. Blocking is what the loser does.
Goes towards establishing a mentality of changing the fear and blocking, into assertive angry striking counterattack.
The difference in mindset changes a lot in'self defence'

And like I said, play dirty. The king hit from his gutless mate that you did not see, may kill you.

Very true Mark. When we taught "self-defence" I don't think it was possible to teach the mind set to win at all cost, particularly for the girls. I guy might take a beating but girls could be raped or killed. Mind set comes with years of training. Response must be beyond a concious thought. It worries me, even today, that when I'm surprised my unconscious mind takes over and all I see is "throat and eyes".

Yeah u are right about the later reactions....

For ladies it can still be scream and attack with nails and car keys. Get them visualising a catfight and instill 'attack not defend'.

Best advice ever for little kids is drop, kick and punch as fast as you can and scream. They love practicing it too lol
Try and grab a kid doing it properly = you will get a nuts kick at some stage hahaha

Can I take the time pass on a humorous story.
Many years ago my chief instructor, who has since sadly pass away, was closing up the dojo one night after everyone had gone home when his exit was blocked by two guys, both a bit drunk. One said, and this is a true story, "I think boxing is better than karate". At this moment he raised his fists and went to throw a punch. My instructor swiftly kicked him in the groin, and down he went like gravity had found a new target. His mate picked him up and dragged the poor unfortunate outside. End of fight.
We laughed about that one for quite a while.

You have reminded me of the only thing I have learned from self defence that I have actually had to use in real life, and that was against my 10 year old nephew. A stance in Kung Fu really puts you in the right position to defend against groin kicks with next to no effort.

Its amazing how frustrated a 10 year old boy can get when he's trying to kick his uncle in the nuts and somehow his uncle keeps on blocking them. It was hilarious to see that he had no idea how I was doing it.

He was almost as confused as I was when my instructor was showing me how to deflect a guy running straight at you and give him a few parting shots as he runs straight past you. A blur of legs and arms you can't follow, but in reality quite a simple sequence, and easy once practiced.

My instructor who is built pretty solid, let alone pretty experienced, was telling the story of some fools in a car getting upset at him and motioning for him to stop for a fight. So he started to. When they realised that he was going to stop, they took off. Its one thing to threaten to beat someone up, but when that person wants to fight you and isn't scared its a different kettle of fish.

The head instructor is of relatively small build but quite muscled, and obviously very good. I imagine there have been a few people that have started to pick a fight with him and then regretted it.

One more.
Many years ago I was in Redfern, Sydney visiting Tony Mundine's gym. As I walked down Everley St three local lads blocked the footpath in front of me. I thought, "This could be interesting." As I got to them I approached with a big smile and said "Excuse me fellas, which way to Tony Mundine's gym?" Their attitude changed immediately and they promptly gave me directions. Quick thinking beats a fight any day.

From what I have seen, the people that can fight seem to have the confidence where they don't need to fight. I mean, if you know what you can do, why would you be afraid, and if you are not afraid why would you escalate it? Self defense only.

Most normal people can't fight, and why should they. We are not living in the stone age.

Its sort of funny that the guys at the top level shouldn't really be caught fighting because I am sure it would be looked on in a different light. The guys at the local place were telling me it wouldn't go down well if they got caught up in a fight and someone figured out they train in this stuff for a living.

The self defense aspect is also a problem, if you are learning self defense that is meant to save your life, its not easy to tone it down 'just enough'. How many ways can you break someone's knee 'nicely'?

I also got one I'll never forget.
Rewind 35 years.
In the city in the middle of the day watching four bogans ( remember them ? ) picking a fight with two guys sitting minding there own business , one on crutches.
The guy in plaster gave it to three of them hopping on one leg using his crutches like some sort of Ninja sticks , while his mate just sat there grinning with his arms crossed.
( the other bogan just watched in horror )
It was so funny seeing this guy chasing these guys , hopping on one leg.
I reckon about fifty people cheered , me and my mates included.
Life memory gold

Fighting or boxing??? Anyone can "fight" (not me, I chased chicks) or throw wild haymakers when your pissed but boxing is a different ball game and takes discipline and courage (guy at school Tom Sawyer) was gifted. I would love to see some of todays "heroes" have a go at a trained amateur boxer. You would get your arse handed to you on a plate.
I think Novetti has it fairly right. Ask guys that know like John Miller that have been fighting for years.

Yep, I've seen Milsy fight, he would knock most people over with a jab, its great watching him punch the bag, its frightening to think people pubch each other like that
The one thing ive noticed from the scuffles ive seen, is its not worth it, getting hurt or hurting somebody else is just crazy. Most fights are just some ill equipped person getting punched with no idea how to defend themselves and most people doing the punching are guys that have some skill but didnt work hard enough to compete properly against other trained fighters
My advice is to take pre-emptive action and just get away from people that are showing that behaviour

I prefer Segal's method of self defence using the opponents own inertia against them. What's that called?

Choreography.

Seagal's form of Aikido works best with highly trained opponents who will not only run face first towards you, but also fall over at the lightest touch

Seagal could probably have fought very well at some time. Certainly better than average Joe. But he likely would have been very average in a tournament, and terrible against an elite. He was only invincible in movies. Of course. Nonetheless he made a very successful career being average. Good on him.

It isn't impossible to walk through people like they were butter, the difference between the elite and the very good is enormous. This guy has over 300 fights:
