Our sailing in Safety Bay suffered disruptions for nearly a season whilst the council stuffed around dredging a channel from the launching ramp, they then they marked it with a set of buoys more suited to the tanker channel in Cockburn.
Already the sands have moved to fill in the dredging, and left a marker dry. Now the beautifully synchronised red and green flashing lights lights could really lead you astray in the dark.
When will our government and councils realise that with all their powers, they can totally control our lives, but they have no control of the sea

Night time nav loose your transom and motor Thanks for the Warining
Hopefully no-one get injured. That green ground being a serious point of interest as a free passage?
Have to nav in to 15 m metres on the trail you went out with keep the line to within 3 meters. .
Theres commercial boats atm launching from palm beach They should of dreaded a safe passage out that way? Boggles my mind aswel dude.
Bent street jetty good for small boats If you have a decent size boat launch from perron. port Kennedy boat ramp naffed cause of swell and full of weed accumulation. .

Im flabbergasted to why they would want to dredge that Knowing that in a full w nnw ssw its gona fill with sand? Stupid
Stupid white collar **** gone down to boat ramp cant lauch for **** got stressed and then went to work on Monday morning saying dredge the pond! Bunch of muppets
I couldn't agree with your more.

Someone must have packed a good sales commission for selling oversized markers...

Now another contractor will re collect our taxes to re-dredge or move the mark.

Rocko council rates increased 100% in 5 years. Good work boys.

Took me a while (and a number of reads) to decipher what you had to say there Buster.

I have been trying to source some satellite images of the area with regards to sand movement in that area over the last 30 or so years (without luck). Even in the time that I have been associated with the area (the last 18 years), it has been amazing how much change has occurred to the pond and surrounding land.

From what I understand, at one stage that spit of land was a small sand island and the water flowed between it and the sailing club, plus the sailing club was a lot closer to the water.

I would love to know where it is going to end up (or is it) as it morphs. There is the adjacent sand bar that sits below the water (obviously tide dependent) at around the 1-2 foot mark underwater that the current sand bar is moving towards. Maybe there is some sand movement prediction algorithm out there that has mapped what is going to happen.

Having SUP paddled that area the other day, it has that boat harbour feel to it, in that the water doesn't seem to flush that well from within the pond, it probably also doesn't help that there is the large pipe that feeds road run-off and the like into it.

It is certainly is an interesting "living" land mass, in comparison to other Perth beach areas that seem to be a lot more stable with regards to sand movement.

Here you go 2002-2012

In the 70's there was no sand bar and a jetty (now under sand) just west of the yacht club

Whats really funny is that the Yacht club has been there longer than the beach in front of it but the council won't let them clear access to launch their boats but are willing to dredge and use heavy machinery for the boat ramps both at bent st and carlisle st.

That really sucks.

I suppose the greenies and bird watchers jumped straight on it, once the little mound of sand grew some plant life.

I remember the yacht club being right on the beach when I was young. Pity there's no allowance for something to be put in place, better than the sand track they currently have.

Set to become a destination, Mangles Bay will provide local residents and visitors with a five-star marine, tourist, commercial, recreational and residential development. With greater public beach access, room for up to 500 boat pens and a thriving tourist hub with restaurants, cafes and affordable family accommodation, Mangles Bay will have something for everyone.

Cant wait Thanks landcorp/ fill your pockets?

Just a breakwater to protect the moorings would do nicely, should have been done when the causeway was built... I don't really like the idea

What about the Ocean Reef marina! Our club is going to become a 2nd Hillarys too expensive for us (non posh) sailors to afford! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
can someone go and find some rare snail or nearly extent spider living in the sand dunes there? Maybe a significant aboriginal site?

I've heard dredging will be happening again this summer. Plus losing 50m off the end of the sand bar to accommodate the channel

Yep, I've heard that too.

I wonder how much money they'll spend on dredging it regularly before they let the idea go?

You mean how much of OUR money they'll spend before..

They really should take the channel in a south east direction away from the jetty, close and parallel to the beach and send boats around the natural weed bank into the sound. Its naturally a bit deeper through there and the dredge would be much shorter and cheaper. It would most likely last longer there.

Any idea when this summer's dredge starts?

No idea, hopefully it'll be a quicker process than the first time.

He has a knack for finding static objects in the water to run into I've noticed, and that's without hitting the bottom.

For God's sake, there are heaps of mega boat ramps in Perth/WA with amazing facilities, one tiny perfect spot for windsports and they have to build a boat ramp there.

Probably before Windsurfing was invented, even so they could possibly entertain the idea of building the boat facilities elsewhere given that mother nature is against them.

What a bunch of environmental vandals. The slurry they dredge up is not sand, it's stinky, muddy ****e. The areas they pumped that crap onto have only just recovered from there last efforts. They stopped kite rigging on tern island to protect the birds and are now are going to cut the end of it of. The Pelicans, shags, and cormarants all sit on the point by the marker they are going to remove.

Wonder what the visiting euros will make of it all and will they return.

I'm no greenie but this is just so wrong.

All involved should be ashamed of themselves.

What a waste of money.

Seriously with the economy situation and general financials, spending money in something that is not permanent and obviously inefficiently as it presents is a disgrace.
