I was not aware there was more than one way it was pronounced.

Please do enlighten us on the correct pronunciation.....

What about people who pronounce 6th "sikth" not "siksth"? They're up there with murderer's and rapists in my books.

I have aksked this myself. Haitch is now common enough to be acceptable by the Macquarie dictionary but I still reckon aitch is more proper and more Englandish like.

Proper I agree with, but Englandish....?
I dunno. Ask a POME to pronounce an H and you'll get some weird, eighhch, sound.

"Poop" makes me want to murder. That seppo p on the end just makes me irrationally angry.

others

I "et" it. No, it is "I ate it"

"I shouldn't of done it". No, it is "I shouldn't have done it", and we shorten to shouldn't've. The double shortening is probably a no-no, however saying "shouldn't of " shows a lack of understanding about that the apostrophe denotes (missing letters) same as can't or don't. Yes it could sound a bit like "of" when spoken but when written it simply is have.

I knew a kid in primary school that pronounced 'off' as 'orf'. Didn't hear it for years, until I recently met someone at work that did the same thing. Where does that come from, some part of Australia? Drives me bonkers!!

There's something that's been driving me mad lately, but I forget what it is.
Oh yes the AH people are putting on the end of words, like here-ah and year-ah. Is it an imitation of how Germans say Porsch-ah?
And there's the old windsurfing one, where people say cavitation when they mean ventilation

WOW, I hope I dont whinge this much about anything and everything when I'm old and grumpy.
There has to be more things in life you guys could put your time and effort into?? Instead of crying how you get sooooo stressed out about how someone pronounces a word.lol
This topic makes facebook look cool.

A hardcore water sports forum, with its old senior citizens topics complaining about pronunciations and spelling???? How embarrassing. No wonder the teens dont want to get into windsurfing when this is what you guys talk about.

BTW it is "don't "

There should be an apostrophe in there.

This is the second time someone has mentioned older people in a negative way recently and it is highly offensive .So keep in mind we are not stupid, just older . Same people we were when we were young, just older .

And yet you took the trouble post something on this forum, a forum discussing the correct pronunciation of a word in the english language. Strange as it sounds like this type pastime is beneath you. We post on here for a bit of fun and sometimes it's like being out in the surf, it only takes one d/head to screw it up for everyone.
Odd that such an innocuous subject brings out the troll in some people.

Depending on where you are from, you probably call all 'white skinned/fair haired' people gringos, or anyone who has ojos claros.

Its not even an insult as far as I can tell, just an observation. Made all the more difficult when there are a lot of mixed people in latin american countries.

Queenslanders. They all do it. Dead giveaway as to where they grew up.

Ask your workmate if they've spent any time in Queensland.
