a lot of forums have similar policies to weed out the people who are not genuine. unfortunately the interweb being what it is has not only given society huge benefits but it has also given a voice to every terrorist and crack pot from here to Russia and back.

Yep. I have found there to be more than a few interesting, intelligent and articulate people with wide ranging views, many of which are different than mine. This makes for a robust debate.
There is no need for abuse, and I'm pretty confident most of us have not gone beyond some light-hearted piss taking, which is very Australian and perhaps even uniquely so.

Agreed. I find yank based forums with a great number of members, and those prone to wild trolling from anti's (like shooting fora I frequent) are particularly harsh with kicking people off, but it results in a very nice environment.
I lament the loss of the introduction post from noobs, the few who do it are well received.

Its funny though. Some people know where to draw the line of 'interesting debate' and others become so caught up in who is right and wrong. I like being a smart arse almost as much as the next person, but if a discussion becomes so important to you that you have to insult people, you need to turn off the computer.
I find it amusing whenever I bring up the term 'your argument is... blah blah blah..' and people think that I refer to them as "arguing", i.e. angry opposition. Its just a forum, and no one has any perfect point of view.

I suspect you also went through the period of network news groups where even the unmoderated ones were almost without idiots, and then as more people got access, it just went downhill to where there was no content amongst all the rubbish.
Filtering a bit and blocking people every now and then is a small price to pay for a good forum. Its tough to keep this forum interesting in the off-season, so I think other discussions are needed.
The Seabreeze forums have always had this single vision:

Whilst "Heavy Weather" isn't aligned with that vision at all, people wanted it around, so it stayed. All that's changed is that Heavy Weather is now a bit like the sealed section of a nudie magazine ... you just don't get to flick through those pages until you've reached a certain age. (Which means about 97% of all current members)
