I just read this article and what I found most interesting about it is the story they outlined very closely mirrors what we have experienced here in SW WA.
Surfing Margaret River 15-20 years ago sharks were an afterthought now they are a big factor in the water down there.
It's interesting to see such a similar situation on the exact opposite side of the globe.
I don't know if I really want to get into the whole cull debate again but I did think this was worth posting.
I am positive that sharks kill more than 1 person a year. Probably one every couple months in Australia alone.

In Australia it's horses, cows, dogs, kangaroos, with sharks and bees tying for 5th place. Snakes, crocs and emus take out 7th, 8th and 9th place. A few of these are due to traffic accidents, nevertheless they are the cause of human fatalities, whether they eat you or come through your windscreen at 110 kph.

Just googled it. You are right mate bees do kill a few people. Funny you never hear reporters going on about someone who just died from. A bee. Yet the second it has anything to do with sharks, the reporters are all over it.

I can just picture it.....I'm being stung by a swarm of bees....hang on, if I slowly climb onto the roof of my apartment block, they won't be able to come near me, yeah, I'll do that. 
And I can understand the whole police conspiracy to cover up bee sting deaths, and pose them as suicides.
Probably the same with pool drowning statistics, all those people that can't swim jumping into the deep end when they are being stung.
Damn, I bet most shark attacks are caused by people diving into the ocean to avoid bee attacks. Everyone knows that bees suck at body surfing and can't duck dive to save their life.

Given the choice between hopping on a horse or going for a swim in the ocean when the shark alarm is blaring? Go for the swim any day.

Yeah mate. But, most attacks happen on unpatrolled beach's. It would be way to loud when there's thousands of people screaming, stamping there feet, driving about in surf patrol boats, for you to really be attacked by sharks anyway at the Gold Coast on a busy day. Now say you are going to go for a swim, across from Redland bay to Peel island in the Dark. Then I would get on a horse any day.
I reckon it it all comes down to Aussies being pretty shark smart. We know (most of us) not to go swimming in the dark. Or not when your alone in a dangerous place. Things like that.

It's just the number of fatalities. Throw in the participation rate, and you'd be right about horse riding being right up there. Oddly enough, I did a life insurance policy interview recently, and they asked if I participated in a number of risky activities, but horse riding wasn't one of them.
I think comparing the different dangerous activities is somewhat besides the point. Yes there's plenty of things that are more likely kill you but it is still important to look at the increase in shark activity and the effect that has on communities.
I don't really buy into the statistics as I don't believe they are properly calibrated for participation. There simply aren't any statistics that are really relevant for people who spend a lot of time in the water in higher risk places ( like surfing the middle of cowaramup bay hilly
)
The idea that there is just more people in the water to see the sharks is totally wrong. There are plenty of breaks around the Margaret River area that have had significant numbers in the water for 30+ years. 20 years ago there were no attacks and interactions with great whites in these areas now sightings and interactions are a regular occurrence at these same places. A similar thing is being seen at a number of places around the globe.
Great whites were made protected great white numbers have increased. This seems like a very simple equation.
How much of an increased risk that actually poses to humans and what to do about it is a much more complicated question.

Interesting story.
He was investigating suicides possible murders but they all had bee stings. Some people started calling themselves the hornets rode around town of small bore bikes making a terrible noise as you could imagine.

I have patted horses, dogs, goats, cows, camels etc etc, not scared once.
I have bought many things from vending machines, driven lots of cars, ridden on motorbikes, not scared once.

A friend of mine , friend died when a horse came through the windscreen.
He was in the car when it happened 
Try surfing late in the afternoon or early evening everyday at a sharky spot then (like fraser island or cactus or some of the renowned dodgy places) and see how u go. The odds are way more likely tjan those stats might suggest

There are so many stories of the old fisherman catching massive sharks on chain. Near Cape Moreton. Very dodgy spot. $100 you will be eaten if you surf the Moreton island surf beach for 6 hours 8pm - 2am and survive.
