I hazard a guess that being a LNP government, most of it will go to business instead of what business and economists are actually asking for - that it go largely to Newstart and the poorest - the people who will spend it straight away and stimulate the economy the best.
For example, instant asset write offs help businesses plan for equipment upgrades that help in future but it does little to stimulate the economy now.
Let's hope I'm wrong about where the money will go.
If you give money to the people they will spend it on bank interest instead of new tv sets and it will just provide income for bank share holders, the failure of monetary policy to take any effect on the economy over the last 12 months has shown us this. The only hope now is to encourage business spending and encourage business to retain employees for when the crisis is over so they can return to normal faster.

Holy guacamole holy guacamole,
This is a watersports forum. 99% of your posts appear to be arguing about politics or just arguing. Could you take that stuff to the Heavy Weather forum or down the pub or something ?
Come on man, 830 posts arguing with people since October last year ain't health dude.
Cheer up, don't be such a groucho or you may turn into the architect of your own demise.
I offer this advice for free - pro-bono you might say.
Ciao, Carantoc

Are you saying that they left it too late and that the level of consumer confidence is in the toilet?
Hang on... ! Is this about the general poor state of the economy or the Coronavirus health impact? Despite being billed as the latter, it sounds like its really the former.

I don't get it. What are you saying? HG is only new here and quite a fast learner. Indeed, a true quick learner and astute observer of personalities. I welcome his input into all these discussions, but it would be good if he branched out into the heavy weather too.
I think I could do with the help arguing with people in all the other topics like anti-vax, flat earth, and the 9/11 thing.
You audi be ashamed Carantoc.

the casual worker will be f#cked over the next few months, in tourism, entertainment, education, etc all affected by the covid.
the casual worker is where a lot of the flexibility is for business.
most businesses will preserve any cash to see it through imho. Those with cash will swoop and pickup the bargains after the carnage.

Yes, its not looking good for them/us if we get hit hard.. although with tourism slowing down and consumer spending slowing down, we are going to get hit no matter what.
We already had a slowdown, now we have to face a crisis. Some could say that its down to bad preparation.

It's going to be a delicate balance... we need business, small business, to survive so the jobs are there to go back to...
Also gotta balance the need to pay food, rent, utilities... and mortgages... a sudden run of mortgage payment defaults could get very messy, very quickly...

C'mon, cut him some slack, you're forgetting he's also the great toilet paper crusader.
Well they've done a bit more than I thought they would.

Hey FN, it's a perfect storm of one drop in confidence moving into another.

Similar to the GFC except a different cause. In the GFC people were at risk of panic and pulling out of everything, so splashing the cash seemed to keep people happy, so much that it was a case of 'what GFC?'.
I actually hope that they get the economy perked up, but I am not sure the idea of slow drip feeding to businesses are a great way for rapid stimulus, but its probably a good way to get a long term positive effect.
Again, I feel compelled to point out that if the Labor party had won the election, there would be howls of protest from some people about how badly they would have managed the economy if they now have to stimulate it. I am okay with stimulus though, as it really is needed. You can't talk your way out of falling demand if its tourism and then the global economy shrinks.

What's heavy weather? Winkie/winker?
its the old "trickle down economics theory again"
not sure what everyone would do with cash if you are bunkered down, but it would make people feel good. Maybe a new surfboard or some new clothes

I felt bad about leaving you out of the conversation. You may not know this, but there is a separate section called Heavy Weather where only long time members are able to read and post there. Unfortunately it seems to be locked from new users now, so you may never experience the fun of these discussions there.
Its a shame you missed that part of the forum, as it was one of the better areas for lively discussions.
Oh well.

and the rich will get richer.
really worried for the huge portion of society reliant on casual hours and industries as above.
it's times like these where the gradually reduced "safety net" (that neo-libs continually strive to diminish) will bite us all as people struggle to provide and survive and will get desperate. buckle up! ![]()

We should start a petition to bring HolyG over to heavy weather. I like the cut of his jib. All the Golden Oldies over there need a stir up.
So where are the school building etc schemes where people can actually get a living from ... zilch business needs customers to survive , Lieberals in for rude shock , cheap houses soon , defaults etc , at least Rudd had a plan for families , Lieberals have
a plan for business ... total failure .

Seems odd it's locked if it's just lively...I'd say it's probably a bit of both - a place for the nutters as well as the impulsive smarty panties.
Is carantoc on day release or just that time of the month?

lol its actually a trickle UP approach with handouts to the poorest. Tax cuts would have been trickle down

True... I suppose if your in the funeral business, now would be the time to replace upgrade hearses , I guess this is what the Lieberals are trying to achieve .
HG / Bono or however you want to self identify these days we all know you will never be happy with anything LNP does but jesus mate they have just delivered exactly what you, the guardian, welfare groups etc etc have asked for but you still arent happy?
no surprise i guess
anyway havnt seen a breakdown of the 17b but seems like the bulk would be handouts to the poor and and the rest are tax breaks for spending to keep jobs so pretty well targeted I reckon.
Cash splash for all would have been nice from a selfish perspective but just would have gone into savings for most of us.

Nah, only adrianominator was banned... Carantoc is still penning the funniest posts around... the red panda is active on the thumb, but shy with the words... and boof still shouts like someone with a big bump on the head... you'll be right out here though, most of the party is outside for a smoke... or whatever it is loggo says is going down...
