Might be interesting to hear why you think it was "crazy lefties that ruin this forum" and not the alt right conspiracy theorist's that forced Laure to crack down on this forum and make it the dull place its become.

I can see why Laurie would have been relectant to introduce it though. I am using it and no doubt some people would want to filter me, but you could easily get to a point where everyone is filtering everyone else and things just stop.

Over the years I have noticed that there are a lot of people out there that want others to create topics and are happy to beat up people for creating ones they don't like. I guess it is easier to filter people out that you don't want to hear from, but does it end up too quiet. It would have been easier if the too annoying ones self-censored, but I guess they don't.

I think the answer to 'why you think it was "crazy lefties that ruin this forum', is that some people find it easier to lump everyone into a bucket called 'lefties' instead of thinking about what people are saying. It seems to have become a default grouping for "things I don't like" for some people.

The roads are in a poor state of repair... bloody lefties.

We have to pay France for submarines we will never get... bloody lefties.

Interest rates are going up... bloody lefties.

My grass grows too quick in summer.... bloody lefties.

We allowed companies to sell a lot of gas to international customers and now there is not enough for local consumers... bloody lefties.

Hah. I thought we were competing for that title, and I am sure you are still far far ahead! I bow down to a master.

Surprisingly some of the 'miserable topics' get the most responses. I am thinking about creating one on an alternative to Bitcoin, but maybe base it on the really poor parts of crypto. Then again, Bitcoin is pretty much based on speculation, so I may as well switch to tulips. Digital tulips though, so its not like its old tech or anything.

Yep, that's right. Those bloody lefties!

They are also now in government and before we know it we have interest rate rises, high inflation, building companies going broke, a great ski season to look forward to, too much rain, not enough drought. All that stuff!

Because the left has gone so far left that if you were either side of the center and haven't changed your opinions, you're now well on the right.

Another way of looking at it is that the USA has been right wing since forever compared to civilised countries. Democrats moving left just means that they are taking positions more like European social democratic parties.
The Republicans don't have much room to move to on their right. They're already gun nuts who think that the only good tree has a target pinned to it, anti women, anti alphabet soup and hate immigrants.

That is one way to look at it.

Which European parties though? UK Labour makes the Dems look sensible, the "social democratic" parties in Scandinavia aren't, and those ex-Soviet bloc nations aren't so fond of rushing left again. I think France is more socially conservative than the US too.

Can't find it now, but I remember a study that found that something like 90% of the far left/right content is spread by less than 10% of the population ie. a very small number making all the noise.

I would but I am ultimately a skeptic. I think that people can't go on being stupid for much longer, but I am pretty bad at guessing this stuff, so it may go on for longer yet.

Have you heard of this new coin? Its meant to be the next best thing and is based on human DNA and provides a unique code for everyone on the planet. You just need to put some bodily fluid on a stick when paying for things. How can that go wrong? Plus its so simple.

Don't tell anyone (tell everyone so that the price goes up), as its a secret.

So I went and read the report quoted in the Australian because it was more appealing than getting the leaves out of the gutters. The take home messages are:
-The Australian still has problems with fact checking.(only 55% of readers rate the paper as 'trustworthy')
- only 4% of the research group get their news via hardcopy newspaper.
-The Sky News Editor does not appear to have the intellectual wherewithal to understand the research. The research he references details the political orientation of the audience, not the media outlet and their political bias.
- As Paradox points out, one of the more interesting outcomes is the political bias difference between people who watch SkyNews on TV(offline) and those who access it online.

The graphs in question courtesy of : Park, S., Fisher, C., McGuinness, K., Lee, J.Y. & McCallum, K. (2021). Digital News Report: Australia 2021. Canberra: News & Media Research Centre, University of Canberra.

It is very hard to define the political orientation of a media source or they would do it. There are no metrics to measure it except from a personal viewpoint, and one person is not a reliable indicator of political orientation. The closest they can do it canvass the orientation of all thier audience. It is a reasonable indicator as people tend not to watch media if it promotoing ideology they don't agree with.

I personally find Sky does stick to it's promoted position of centre right and is happy to debate anything, but does put that political spin on it and admits it. I think this draws people who are seeking all views on a topic. Left leaning media tends to shun debate and shut down opposing views. They also furiously claim they are balanced, when plainly they are not.

Regarding sky news on television, it must be noted that people have to suscribe and pay to access it. Whereas most of the other media sources they do not. That does skew the audience somewhat.

Actually, Sky is free to air in regional areas. Where I live it's on channel 56, right next to the televangelists on 55.
I find it's quite easy to reinforce my biases by switching over to either if there is nothing of pressing importance being aired by ABC/SBS

Or conservative firearms owners

But I suppose if like Kami you think that Fascists/Nazi's are left of centre.
