Not that I would try it myself, but I have heard ex pats over there say that some of the dentists are very very good with better equipment than most western dentist. Like I said not that I would risk it myself, no doktorgigi for me. twooth:hurty already

Is that the Aussie bloke? There are a few Australian dentists in the Kuta area I believe.
I have seen some bloody terrible dentistry out of the likes of bali over the years. I'm not saying that there aren't any good dentists over there, but in my experience what I have seen is ** house treatment. People may think they are saving themselves money, but for many in the long run it's just more heartache and money when it all goes pear shaped. Not to mention I would be very wary of the infection control practices in some of these countries. Yep going to the dentist in Australia isn't cheap. It is a very expensive service to provide with high over heads. But be assured cheap dentistry is just that - cheap and nasty.

I have, in my 34 year career as a dentist, never seen "good" dentistry out of Bali....I've seen 1 or 2 "OK" jobs but the majority are "poor to very poor" and some are "unbelievably dreadful". Bali is not known as a centre of dental excellence! Nor is anywhere in South East Asia for that matter....it's a 3rd world area so quality, although it exists, can be very hard to find.
In every country in the world, dentistry is expensive to the locals....to the Balinese people their dentists are exorbitant, same with the Swiss etc.

If you must do it, get some personal recommendations from people who have been to the actual dentist themselves and had work done in the past....not a recommendation from a Travel Agent ( who are always on a kick-back) or the bloke down the pub. Poor choice selection.
Most of the big cases like crowns and dental implants, the high costs items in Australia, are difficult and time-consuming for a dentist to do both well and predictably. Recent evidence is finding that, even in 1st world countries, dental implants have far more long-term problems than we had ever expected. Badly placed dental implants are very difficult and invasive to correct with huge costs in the process.
Just remember, if you buy a "$20 Rolex" it's not actually going to be a Rolex although it might go for a while!!

Ok not Bali but, I had a work mate who's been going to the same dentist in Vietnam for years, my wife and I needed some dental work so that's where we went. I can honestly say we are very happy with the results, my wife was quoted $3.500 here. In Vietnam my wife had lots of fillings and an implant which we will have to go back for to be finished, they didn't think the crown she was quoted for here in Aus was needed and the implant wasn't in the Aus quote so that's a bonus. Me, I had a crown and a bridge done, total cost for the both of us $1,600 although my wife's implant isn't finished.
Although we stayed in a cheap hotel (nice) surrounded by more Honda bikes than mosquitoes in FNQ, the dentist was in a nice area with BMW's etc parked in the street, not a hole in an alley. Total cost for us with airfares, hotel, dentist, tucker and a few tours was $5,000 for the two of us although we didn't stray too far from Ho Chi Minh and only ate local tucker (yum). When we go back it will be for a month plus and we'll have a better look around south to north. The Viennese are bloody nice people.

It's an expensive service to provide mate. The overheads in running a dental surgery are huge. The only way to deliver cheap dentistry is to cut corners which ultimately compromises the quality of the care provided. So I say again cheap dentistry is just that - cheap and nasty. I don't & won't do it, but am happy to fix things up for you when the bargain basement dental work fails.
I was in Bali about a month ago, my board hit me in the mouth and broke a crown on Tuesday. Saw a dentist on Wednesday, new crown was fitted on Saturday. That was about a month ago, cost AUD$350, no problems. Dentist was Bali911 at Galleria.
I always ask this question to people who have invasive dental procedures done "cheaply' overseas :
Can you drink the tap water where you are staying? That same water runs through the dental waterlines.
Where I live is a 2 hour flight from Bali, so see a lot of people who get work done there.
Bali911 advertises in Jetstar flight magazines. I think they are great. They are and endless source of indirect referrals for my practice.
A barber works for years with the sign $20 haircuts. Across the street a new salon opens with the sign - $5 haircuts.
First guy changes his sign to "We fix $5 haircuts"
i am a massive tightwad but I would never consider anything like that done there.
Stop wasting money on frivolous stuff and save up. worth it. It's not just the quality of the dentist, It's the comeback you have if something is wrong. the warranty! In australia you have to comply with so much quality and regulatory, insurances, professional bodies, ongoing traiing etc. What does some feral indon have to do in a country where they are so cheap they use industrial chemicals to make you cheaper cocktails
With the rise of Super Bugs in SE Asia that are resistant to antibiotics this means that if you are unfortunate enough to become infected you are in very deep poo..much deeper than the level you are normally in with your wife. One of the major overheads in dentistry is the cost of cleaning and sterilizing everything. Add to that the cost of checking and double checking all the equipment is doing just that. Remember a dentist in Australia is required to maintain the levels of cleanliness that you would expect in a hospital theatre. So you may always be in the poo with the missus, but at least most of the time it won't kill you.
Everyone seems to have nothing but bad things to say. After 2 years of looking abroad for dental care I would go to Vietnam.
You read alot of good and bad experiences. So far here I have spent over 15k in the last 5 years on my teeth and they are stuffed.
My last trip cost $7200 and did not even put me under even though I was throwing up in pain.
I hate Australian Dentist due to the way they charge. I understand cost of setup/equip ect but cmon. How are people in this day and age meant to afford thousands on teeth when alot of people including me can not even afford the fuel to go to the beach for a few hrs.

had 3 wisdom teeth out in vietnam years ago for around $50 US, spent another $50 or so on codeine the week after (may have been a little hooked in the end 
but it was worth it). think i was quoted $3500 or something in perth before i as heading overseas for a while, and put it off, but was getting bad pain whilst living in hanoi and a friend recommended her local dentist.
the bottom one was maybe a little risky given the risk of severing that nerve in your jaw etc, but the Aus dentists won't guarantee against that happening either. the top ones were well worth it given they are really just a pain killer and plier job from (fading) memory.
not having a crack at aussie dentistry because i'm sure the standards are mega high and then the costs will be for good reason, but my experience in nam was fine and i put it mostly down to using my local friends recommended dentist.

It seems that most posters on this thread will not let reality get in the way of their prejudices.
The reality is that if you have dental work done in countries like Bali there is a very high chance that you will get inferior treatment, compared to what you would receive in Australia.
You get what you pay for.
just spent 20k on 4 implants here in Aus, no frigging way id get them done away from home, had a great dentist, yes it was expensive, but the after care and service is where its at
I suggest that anyone who is thinking of having dental work done overseas try the Trip Adviser forums. There are hundreds of posts from people who have had work done.
