I have purchased a programme for my eldest ( 8 ) to help him prepare for his Naplan test this year. He is a smart kids but he does struggle a little bit with numbers and patterns. I don't understand some of the questioning so buggered if I know how a year 3 kids can figure it out. Anyhow, this question stumped be for a bit....
Counting to 21 by 3's, which number appears in the sequence.

18...maybe they should have asked which number was a multiple of three and counting to as high as 21

That is an issue I have discovered with this programme. It sends me an email saying how many times he has logged on in a day/week, what percentage he got, how many attempts he has made and how long it has been since he last logged on. What it doesn't give is an explanation to the answer.
Apparently zero is not a number so you start at 1 (if you reverse this and count down from 10, a rocket should lift off at 1 and not 0). So starting at 1 and counting by 3s, you will get 16 in the sequence. That is the only conclusion I can come up with. It doesn't make logical sense to me though.
What use is that to us in this modern world? I wouldn't want my kids learning such useless information ! Further more who includes Zero when counting?

Just need the right phone plan with heaps of gig, there is a app for everything, and if there isn't an appropriate app , seabreeze general forums will have the answers.

What do you get
If you start at 1 and keep adding 3 you will never get to 21 so all the answers would be wrong. You do get to 16, but you never get to 21.
I take it its not a matherletics program if it is I will ask my youngest tonight he told me he is rated 4th in the world 1st in Australia but it goes up & down a bit last week he was 16th but its on how often & how fast you do maths . Yet he's the 1 who wants to be a professional football player & as I joked with my dad we don't care how well he does at school , when your that good looking & that well hung who cares.
They don't call him biggest dickest for nothing.
Me & dad both agree he gets it from us .
must be family trait .
But i go with 18. Yeah im way proud of my kids & i hug them & tell them every day .
I just see it at what option is e evenly divisible by 3. Thus 18.

I do think the education syllabus lately is messing young peoples minds up more than teaching them how to think.
So you go into a shop and pick an item that costs $37.89, take it to check out person and hand over $50 note, 4x $2 coins, a 50c coin and 2 x 20c coins.
The check out operator looks reasonably intelligent so why is it so hard for them to figure out that you want a $20 note and a $1 coin change???
Why are you getting all stressed about your kids performance in a test that guages the entire age group , relative to previous tests?

God, even worse I bought something for $11 and handed them $16 to get a fiver back and they look stumped.
Gorgo has the best answer to this one, even if they are being smartarses and want us to start at 1 - 4 -7 -10 etc........ 21 won't be in there/

Back in my day at school.... well there was no such thing as "outcomes", it was pass or fail. Where did that go?
No wonder literacy and numeracy are becoming almost worthless.

Im not sure if im a crap Mum or I just dont care to much about Naplan. My son came home and said he was doing it this year. My response was, oh is that on again. Have fun. The only thing I get from Naplan is I can sort of use it to see if they are struggling in certain areas but Ive never added extra study.
Who said you have to start at 1 for this question? Or 0, or even a whole number?
You definitely know 21 is in the sequence and you go up/down 3 at a time, that leaves 18 as the only option that's available.
Slightly off topic, but I recently attended a first aid course and one of the answers conflicted with the workbook supplied. In order to gain competency, I needed 100% so when the assessor was marking the results - he asked me about it and I told him the answer sheet must be wrong! He told me to "just change the answer so that it corresponded with the correct answer on the sheet" which I refused to do. This started confusion in the classroom with nearly everyone changing their answer...whilst I refused to and was told that I would possibly fail my first aid (probably only person in history to do so!)
I got home and immediately emailed the company that produced the workbook (also the RTO). I immediately got a response thanking me for my honesty as the workbook had been in circulation for 6 months and this was the first they had heard of it.
I passed...and got sent some promotional posters as a thank you. I haven't seen the assessor since but expect that he still maintains that what is in the book is right - even if it's wrong.

slapped together with an emphasis on graphics probably and not content.
. my wifes a teacher and she has had the kids doing naplan stuff., theres plenty of poorly worded or structured questions. My kid always get's the century questions wrong (i.e. 301ad is the fourth century), and i dont blame him because its not intuitive. - and there are heaps of questions on this
I dont give a toss about it. it makes no difference to your kids results, only the entire schools rankings.
I mean We encourage them to try and it's good practice for tests that matter, but thats about it.
The whole idea of teaching them for the test, and it not benifiting the child in anyway, and the emphasis placed on it (not to mention the time it takes and the amount of testing) has got hair on it imho.
This thread should really be over in HW forum.
Plenty of people over there can put 3 and 3 together and get 16.

I wouldn't be saying that. Different parents put different emphasis on different things.
This is the first year that I have (more correctly my son has) had to deal with Naplan. Personally I do not understand fully what it is all about. While I understand that it is used as a measure towards the school, I also thought certain grades had to be met by the individual over the course of the year to continue up a year.

I think you may be right there myusernam. The problem is that it is making an otherwise intelligent kid more unconfident by using a programme that is suppose to help. I go through the answers with him when he is finished, and as I said above, sometimes (certainly not most errors) I cant figure it out. Sounds familiar, I have to do quite a few online, compulsory training modules for work. They seem to spit out a new one every month or So. Every online exam has at least one question that is worded wrong or all the answers are incorrect. Many times we've contacted the office that co-ordinates and releases these modules but they refuse to change it because it would cost too much money, or some other bull**** excuse.

It's an interesting conundrum that you face.
With the natplan you will get the kids result, but that is all that will happen. If this is your first run at the testing, it means that your son is in lower primary?, I have had two kids go through school, and seen all the parenting approaches. Most approaches have the final goal of getting 'a good grade'... I think that kids need to enjoy learning, and discovery. sure they need to pass tests, but the ability to enquire and consider problems is the ideal of education. I might sound like a lefty, but I'm not!.. I have just been lucky that my ids enjoyed most of their subjects and that homework was never a battle at home.
Your decision is if your son enjoys doing the natpan prep, then that is great, but if he resents it, then leaning for him will be associated with log ins, time stamps, blah blah blah....
Not an answer, just my perspective on the whole school thing....
They will not keep a kid down due to Naplan results. Infact I tried to get my daughter kept down and no one would, even the education dept refused. It was only kindy too. So now she is quite delayed and far behind, she has disabilties too. Her first Naplan is 2 years away and she wont do well, But education dept stated to me that they dont keep kids down anymore.
