A pop is the sound a torn achilles tendon makes.

Did you have your doctor do the Thompson test ? What was the result ?

Did your doctor get an MRI and an X ray and other images ? What was the result ?

Do not underestimate the matter. You can still walk with a torn achilles tendon,, I could and I even worked out at the gym and went running with injury. I just thought it would heal itself. I was wrong. Please do not make the same mistake.

As Elsa said in frozen, Richard, let it go. The Achilles is at the back of the ankle and he is describing an over stretching of the outside of the ankle. Very unlikely it is an Achilles injury. If the Achilles was ruptured, as in snapped, he would have a floppy foot with no ability to point his toes, and probably no swelling on outside of ankle. If it was torn, he would have pain at the back of ankle, and possibly swelling.

If you are worried, as in, can't walk, is severely painful and not improving then you should see someone. A gp, a physio, a chiro. They will take a history of the injury, examine you, then determine if in your case you require further radiological examination.

They may order, plain X-rays, ultrasounds, CT or MRI. This can only be determined after chatting with you and examining you, by a professional, if you are still concerned.

Likely diagnosis would be strain of the lateral ankle ligaments, or rupture of the lateral ankle ligaments, or fracture of the ankle (talus, tibia, fibula?)and with any of the above.

Noted Dr Sparky. I will leave this up to Windpasser as he is the one who must look after himself. I hope all works out for him.

Wind passer update required....

Have you sawn your foot off at home now with a rusty chainsaw?

Are you alive?

Is your foot better than ever now, after following the advice on seabreeze?

Has all of this information given for ankle enabled a remarkable recovery like reiki healing?

Did you try a bit of home acupuncture with some toothpicks and a poultice made of kale and chai tea?

Can you not respond as you are currently in surgery?

The lack of response is alarming, it can only be two things your ok or your not

It's great to hear all your experiences. That was what I was mainly after. Some great stories.

I have literally done nothing for 5 days just resting and stretching.

Swelling has gone nearly right down (still a bit), ankle and foot is a sickly yellow colour which should dissolve into the tissue within 2 weeks.

Bit stiff in the morning but I can walk again with no pain but I'm very carefully treading. Getting good movement back.

Doing my strengthening and stretching exercises successfully. Still wearing a compression bandage most of the day to hold everything in place and it just feels stronger.

Buss was spot on with the balance test. I need to go through 4 stages. The injury involves neurological receptors, balance and proprioception exercises are essential for full recovery

Stage 1 - 60 seconds arms out eyes open.
Stage 2 - 60 seconds arms on chest eyes open.
Stage 3 - 60 seconds arms out eyes shut
Stage 4 - 60 seconds arms on chest eyes shut.

Still working on stage 1, I am amazed how much effect this has on your balance. So easy on the good ankle but my brain is broken on the sore ankle.

Also been told to never ever, ever wear slip on work boots again. They have been, and are being banned in many workplaces for this exact reason. They have or quickly end up with no ankle support. With my thin socks on my feet were literally swimming within the boot.

Still got a long time for a full or close to recovery ahead but its getting better day by day.

I thank everyone for your advice and experiences. Sorry ZeeGerman But I failed on the no alcohol part, and Richard G that sounds horrific, I got sick looking at Archilles Tendon surgery pictures.

The balance exercises are amazing. The human body is so crazy.

The more and more I try it the longer I can go. It's not any kind of pain that makes you topple, it's your stupid brain not doing the correct tweaks to keep you upright.

Yesterday I couldn't even manage a few seconds. Good ankle was fine.

Today I can get almost 20-30 seconds most attempts. Shut my eyes and I topple.

I never thought you would need to teach your brain to balance again.

Rolled my ankle last Monday, heard a crack as it went, thought it was a sprain but went to emergency the next day, x-rays confirmed 2 fractures. In a moon boot and crutches for 4 weeks.

Doctor asked when I broke it the first time, didn't know I had.

Thanks Vince.

I will get Pro help from the Doc tomorrow (who will probably no doubt tell me to RICE it). Better to be safe than sorry.

It's the huge "POP" sound that worried me.

I can pretty much walk on it now very, very carefully. It's only been 52 hours.

Just wanted to hear if other people have done it and their recovery story.

It just "happened" which sux.

I fell out from an avalanching scree slope when I was bushwalking and felt 2 pops..but mine was bad - foot at an angle - tibia + Fibia broken - no way I could put weight / walk or even move without pain..Op and hardware and almost 12 months since and still feel it and occasional issues but pretty good.
Just thought it was interesting you felt a pop as that's the first thing I noticed as I fell out from the hill..

Far out Chris, Everest. Congrats.

Yeah the "POP" was loud. Definitely a concern. But as I can walk on it almost now after 3 days the ligaments should be able to repair themselves without a cast, just being very careful. Could take 6 weeks for the scar tissue.

Respect to people with real disabilities. Champions. Don't know what you got till you lose it.

So true..even trying to get around the house . I had to start using a bumbag so I could carry stuff around. If nothing else having injured myself I can now really appreciate just being able to do things. I did an hour and half simple bushwalk this morning including up my first steep broken 4wd track since the break and it was SO good to have no issues..Thinking back I couldn't even get from the house 50m to the garage..

Glad to hear. Our bodies are amazing at repairing themselves, while also making them stronger.

I am still taking baby steps, can walk well and carry weight - still healing, only been 3 weeks. But what a wake up call it was.

Mind you a long time ago I got run over by a boat and my foot mutilated by a Johnson 35HP boat propeller. Hit straight between the Big toe and second toe and split almost through the other side. (I was trying to kick away at the time)

By pure absolute fluke the nerves and tendons were fine. Hospital said I was very lucky. Fatality from a propeller in the head by someone skurfing the same day in the department. Pain was fine. "Snapping and Popping" my ankle hurt a lot more, though the recovery time is a lot better. 3 months on crutches after the boat split my foot. (Other foot too, by the way)

Funniest thing was the Hospital was not even 1km from the ski beach. After the propeller chop a mate drove his 4WD onto the ski beach area (Illegal), picked me up and took me to Emergency.

It wasn't till we got nearly to the hospital my foot, which looked like a cut of pork so far, decided to start spewing what looked like litres of blood into his 4wd. It was gross. It was like my brain said we are at the Hospital you can bleed now.

Once inside the hospital and he saw my foot up close, my mate passed out and concussed himself on one the the signs that was sticking outside one of the doorways.

So I had to sit there while every available hand (Sunday) attended to poor old concussed mate bleeding from his head on the ground unconscious.

Once he was sorted they came back to reconstruct my foot back together. And again said how lucky I was because of the other fatality.

I love being able to walk, and having arms and hands. Things are not that bad if you have those things. Vision and Hearing too.

We are so lucky to have "all" of these things.

Respect to those that never had them to begin with or lost them forever.

I'd like to never whinge about stuff ever again, but I will... I suck

I popped my ankle a couple of years ago in a messed up paraglider top landing. I iced it and rested it for a week then joined in a flying tour.

It's generally fine. It feels a touch arthritic if I do a lot of aggressive toeside riding on the kite surfboard. There's a fair bit of load on my right ankle.
