hi
i want to start wingfoiling after many years windsurfing and lately windfoiling.
i will buy starboard freewing ( my local dealer and friend).
what size should i get ? 8m 7m 6m ? i intend to use it at lowest winds, but i will learn on that wing. i prefer the 8m but isn't it too large for learning?
cheers
felix
Felix I learned with 7m Airush/Starboard and I'm 225lb not sure of your local conditions but you said light winds?think the 7m will suit you just fine does me,pulls like a diesel great big guy wing and the good thing about that wing is pretty hard to catch your wingtips for a big wing, have smaller wings more prone to the dreaded wingtip drag. They have new V2 SB wings coming out too,but if you can get a deal on the V1 can't go wrong, but perhaps the V2 even better

Felix
im 102kg and learning on a 6m
can fly in 10-14kts gust no problems. Getting over powered at 20kts gusts
probably depends on your local typical wind?
you might find the top end limits more than bottom end- its petty hard to sail sub 10kts anyway imo

Depends on your area. For me a 7m is a must have for anyone over 80kg. The old Gong 7m was a handful but the 7m Takoon Is not bad to lean on. The Airush 7m has been very good for beginner around here
I wonder for all Riders who did responded and are over 85kg, have you tried a 5m on a front wing around 2000cm2 and what is the difference vs 6 or 7? Tks!
Agreed anything over 6m is silly and too much.
A bigger foil and good technique is more important and you don't have to handle a big wing in your hands.
Just pick a 6m wing that has a lot of low end.
thanks for the reply.
do you think the 8 is too big?
Yes,and never seen a 8m SB so can't say.The SB 7m strong point for a large wing is that it really amazes me at 5'10" ht how it does not have the tendency to tip drag,as for example my 6m Ensis by design has more tendency to tip drag than the 7m go figure, but I've learned to tweak my pumping technique to adjust for my Ensis 6m which is a nice wing too.You mentioned your mainly in a lightwind area so that's why I'm suggesting the 7m and in our weight class I've personally used the 7m in 15-25 mph no problem too so it does have a bit of upper range to boot, now if your saying you get quite a few windier days in your area go with the 6m SB which is also a great wing but bottom end advantage obviously goes to the 7m diesel puller never tried a wing yet with that low end that it has,but it is very manageable for a big wing, maybe the V2 coming out even better roll the dice
I'm heavier than you Felix and a. 7 is plenty as long as you have a decent size foil I use the Cabrinha v2 and it ms awesome but learning on a smaller wing in more wind will be easier say a 6 learning in a good breeze is a lot better than light and bad technique with a big wing I don't think 1 sail is a good thing maybe borrow a 2nd one if possible or bite the bullet and buy 2
i have the starboard supercruiser and added recently a front wing of S-type 2400 for winging and i'll try to windfoil too. didnt use it yet.
That 2400 wing is a beast the super cruiser is mega stable for winging for pumping the board the new version with the shorter fuselage would be more suited for winging not sure if that's what you have or the older one which is what I have but still great for your needs far as wing sizes go if you go a 7 definitely the 5 for a 2nd with your weight you can use a 5in 25kts down to about 15
