Staying near San Clemente, CA, area in July. Looking for wing friendly spots or launches (assuming some wind)? Any help appreciated.
Wind tends to be lighter in summer in SoCal so you're looking for an afternoon seabreeze to kick in (which might be 8-15kt). Also, if you're able to drive a couple of hours then options open up... This guy has some good videos from local areas:
two different wind patterns down there: thermal and clearing (NW)
San O picks up the NW and there are some guys who wing there. Also further down in San Diego Mission Bay there are some lighter regular winds. Further north, Seal Beach picks up the NW and Cabrillo picks up the WSW thermal wind. Cabrillo is several knots windier than Belmont which is onshore, full of kiters and stingrays. Watch out for stingrays at Seal Beach also. Further north Leo Carrillo can have awesome waves and thermal wind... and just past that County Line works on the NW. Lots of other spots, but I've only windsurfed/winged a handful of them.
As far as summer goes, Cabrillo in San Pedro is probably the most reliable for wind but June Gloom can sometimes screw it up.
