Hi

Can i sanity check the foot positioning for Wing Foiling?

If i am a natural footed surfer (left foot fwd), standing at the beach, looking out to sea with wind coming cross shore from the Right...you launch and go out (to sea) switch stance..is that right?i am a longtime windsurfer (and more recently wind foiler) where we swap our feet around at the gybe, so in the above scenario i would sail out in goofy, then gybe and come in Regular.

But for Wing filing / dinging - you never move your feet and just ride switch 50% of the time?
Or does it depend on the size of the board ie smaller boards preclude foot swtiching (and vice versa)?

Thanks - just looking at getting into it, and have no one local so asking stupid questions - more to come!

Can switch like windsurf or not. Sometimes I switch before gybe. If task loaded sometimes end up crossed up.

I'm a regular footer. In that situation, I'd ride out goofy foot. Then jibe, switch to regular foot, then if wave riding, never switch feet again. I'd surf toe side, heel side, toe side, etc. I'd switch to goofy foot sometimes to rest my right leg.

You need to learn all stances.

Yes leaving your beach, you would ride out right foot forward. Projecting forward: an intermediate wing foiler can ride comfortably with either foot forward (heelside= chest facing wing) or strong foot forward but toeside. (toeside=back facing wing with upper body twisted). Switching feet on foil is not difficult with some experience.

If you don't have any foiling experience, at your beach, you will ride out right foot forward, crash and restart left foot forward to get back. Once you are heading back to the beach left foot forward, you can now learn to carve around but not switch your feet and ride away from beach toeside. Over time, you will learn to switch feet from right foot forward to left foot forward (toeside), then carve around to left foot forward(heelside) back to beach.

Your beach situation, though more challenging in the beginning is ultimately good because it forces you to learn to ride right foot forward. You can learn to switch feet regardless of board size.

I am natural footed and ride healside in both directions. I generally only ride toeside if the wind strength is good or I am turning onto wave.

With a bit of practice you will learn to switch your feet around as needed.

Thanks for all the responses...so essentially ride like i windsurf for the main part (and switch feet in the gybe)

Yep....

Most of us here learnt to gybe by dropping the board back onto the water, turning, swapping feet, then coming back onto the foil.

We graduated to staying on the foil during the gybe, then dropped to the water to switch from toeside to healside, then back on the foil.

To eventually just committing to learning to swap feet at any time you needed too.

I can go healside/toeside in natural stance, but I can only do healside on goofy (toeside feels weird). Just about practice.

I don't think many people ride toeside on their weak side, therefore we switch feet before the gybe on weak side side but after on strong side.
Foiling foot switches are so much easier with a wing vs kite. Use the wing to hold you up and walk across the board.

Originally I rode more toeside than switching up regularly. But now I am consistent with foiling jibes I change nearly every time unless I am wave riding. It is far more efficient to change stance. The energy saved is huge. Spend the time to learn to jibe on the foil. Well worth it.

Another person telling everyone else how to ride ha ha. Do what you feel is most comfortable. I prefer to stay in my surfing stance and its a bonus if you throw the wing to your hip and pump like its not there when your on a swell or something. There is no right or wrong!
Ride risky!

But there is more efficient and less efficient. Riding twisted bowel is less efficient until you are on a wave. As a less skilled rider I ride like this, better riders switch feet and benefit from the efficiency (faster and better upwind). As I improve my skills I ride switch more especially when I need to beat upwind back to the waves. It is not pretty to watch when I switch feet though
Each to his own, there are some really highly skilled wingers that ride twisted bowel all the time. If all I did was downwind then I would probably not bother to develop gybing skills.

Hilly wing ding and efficiency are two opposite words ha ha I like the twisted bowel name. Maybe i learn to gybe one day! Such a pole boarder thing to do.... so 70's ha ha
