Hi I have been prone surf foiling on 5ft board for a while now . I have never wind surfed nor sup. But race a 14ft catamaran and surfed for 45 yrs. Love foiling.
I have my eye on a 5mt wind wing. Hoping to learn winging and get into and out of the surf. Any advice appreciated. I'm 76 kgs

I'd say if you're not a big person a 4m should be fine to learn with and if you are big a 5m would be better.. depending on your local conditions.

Thanks I would prefer learning in light to moderate winds. On a small 4ft 8 40 lts prone foilboard. Front strap.

Unless you're a freak athlete it will not be fun learning to wing on a prone board. If you can rent or borrow a 100L+ to get your wings it will speed up learning curve like crazy. I would go with the 5m

A buddy of mine started winging yesterday,5m wing and very gusty +25kt..he was foiling and gaining upwind both tacks in an hour.Crashing a lot of course.

But:
Board was a lot bigger than a prone, 5'7 90l.
He is an ex-shortboard windsurfer, good surfer and beginner surffoiler.About 75kg.

Wings have huge upper range, and main problem at beginning is lack of power to rise on the foil, because your pumping will be inneficient.I would go 5m as said above.
If you can beg/borrow/steal a bigger board for two days...
And certainly go when it is windy,18kt to 25kt.

I'm 79kg. Started winging 3 months ago. I'm on a 5'6" 105ltr board with a 5mtr wing. Great set up.

Learning on a prone board is doable but will foresure make life harder than it needs to be. You will also need more wind just to pull you up out of the water. Like some others have said find a small sup foil board and do the learning on this just to get all the skills side up.

Where about are you located? I have a few SUP foil boards around the place and if close enough to one of them you can probably borrow one to get the first part of the learning side done maybe.

If you really want to learn on the prone go down and practice just standing on the board underwater as this will be a very important part. Once you can do this no worries then bring the wing into it as well and hold it high out of the water, you will need 15 knots or more to start with at least.

Thanks heaps
yes I will go with the 5mt wing. I have had a few practice at sinking my prone 5ft 40lt Prone foil board.
I can hold it down ok with both front and back feet Balanced water pressure helps, but I think it would need to be in really deep water. This could definitely make learning harder. I thought maybe a waist leash on the wing so I could paddle out deeper.
A sup foil board would be very handy. I have my gofoil iwa front wing and a high aspect GL 140. .
In Victoria South Coast.
Thanks for all the advice cheers.

Gday all,
Just wondering what board length plays in learning to wing, im a novice prone and have been learning on an old axis 920 front wing, with standard fuselage which I picked up on gumtree, I'm wanting to pull the trigger on wing ding board but unsure whether to go the smaller boards like smik or Konrad or the longer sunova aviator if it makes any difference I'd .. I'm 70 kg and looking at about weight +15/20L for a happy medium between ease of learning and equipment longevity! Any advice is appreciated as always

Personally I'd prefer as short as possible given the same volume. But there's way more to it than length. Bottom profile for example, where the volume is on the board, rail outline, back profile for early release, chimes, bla bla bla ... But all of those options you said would work well. I'm using one of those new 90L carbon YObs and can't really fault it. Ride with guys that have all the other three mentioned and they work well. The fanatic sky wing board is also a good option to. Won't be your only board man just get one and go.

If it's mostly going to be your board for winging then go short foresure I am 77kg and ride 5 x 26 x 90L and I can wing and Sup wave foil in this same board. www.oneoceansportsaustralia.com/shop/wind-wing-boards

I can stand on this board super easy but if you are on the wing it's just as easy to knee start.
