Recent deep ocean bay crossing on Australia's east coast.
At the start I had ended up a long way out and very tired anxiously looking for a wave and means to rest. Found the energy and lined it up across the bay.
Yeah couple of bad decisions early on looking for a connect but you pumped your way out of it , huge effort , such a great run . BTW the main foiling page is where we post the prone stuff but all good here ![]()

Yeah context is I looked over my shoulder when on that first wave in the vid and saw my mate and wanted to peel back onto the wave behind him so we could party all the way but the wind got so strong and I had to pump across it in a north east direction way out into very deep water where the swell just doesnt stand up. Got pretty anxious when I started to get tired and was struggling to stay high on the mast realising how far out I was. No better sense of relief than finding the linkup when your gassed a long way out![]()
Oh man....that was a pump fest but you made it! How many humans could do what you did? Apparently not many--I saw one other guy on a foil--or all those poor blokes groveling for scraps inside would be doing it too. Good for you. Wish I could do it. Thanks for the video. I wonder if there was enough wind out there for a wing to be useful so we mortals might get a ride.![]()
I need to move to Oz. You guys seems to have these endless big wave bay things. In CA we have really deep water everywhere so it's tricky to find a nice foiling wave and swell like this.

Thanks mate, usually isnt as much of a pump fest, but ended up way too deep without any wave options and I am desperate not to fall. When its big it can be tricky to get the pump out through the break to the smooth water outside. Regarding winging, not sure about wategos but a few mates have winged the pass in a S/SW which is straight offshore and they loved it and were able to ride the swells in the areas where I am riding in this video. Only downside is its mostly ocean and large waves on the beach if you end up downwind and some of the boys who have tried it came back in at elements resort further north.

I have been mindsurfing hollister ranch in california on google maps which looks awesome but heard there is some pretty big access challenges. We do have these awesome big bays but the open beaches are usually big waves not foil friendly so everyone ends up in the bays and it gets crowded.
I've surfed Hollister Ranch and it's full of really awesome breaks, but I don't know about linking them with pumping. It's more scattered--not much like a bay. Yes, access is the big issue, but if you work at it you might find a member who's willing to get you in. Right now there is a huge legal battle going on regarding public access.
I bet you've been talking with Gorge Greenough, right? Is he still living at Byron?

Yeah I have been there myself so many times , stuck in nomads land . Do I go even wider or retreat back to Wategoes ? The gas tank is on empty and you go for broke
and yeah the wind out there , you can't see it on the video but it's pushing against you and you look at the cliff face and realize how far offshore you are.... makes you dig so deep for just a few more pumps otherwise you have a 400m paddle back in.
Again props to your recovery at the start , that would have been a lung-busting thigh-burning experience. ![]()
I've been to Hollister Ranch a few times on my inflatable boat. Access is hard but not as hard as getting someone to watch the kids all day while I'm gone.
Tons of kelp out there. I can't really think of anywhere I'd foil.

yeah George is still in the area although dont think he ventures into the bay very much anymore. I do see him pretty frequently at the next town south riding his surf mat. Not sure what his opinion is on foils, those old dudes either think they're awesome or absolutely hate them.
Yeah I have just mindsurfed Hollister a bunch on maps and looked more like a downwind run than a big bay run. Read all about the battle for access and it is so strange to read about coming from Australia where we have nothing like this

I hadn't thought about kelp! Heard somewhere that anywhere north of ventura and santa barbara that kelp is an issue for foils. Is this the case? I am planning a california foil trip in the future, sounds like I should just stick to very south southern california?
