One step at a time.
Go to Kmart, get a $30 skateboard and learn the basics of going upwind, reaching and what it feels like to be powered up. Practice turning and all your more intermediate manoeuvres this way. 30 minutes on the land, saves multiple hours on the water.
No matter what you're going to suck, get over any preconceived ideas that's you'll be Kai Lenny in a weekend and you'll have fun.
As a beginner you're super inefficient, lots of volume, cm2 and a big wing will help (5-8m).
Don't waste effort in light wind. Moderate to fresh is all you should play with. Light take foil skill and wind knowledge.
Foil in flat water, avoid super marine trafficked areas. In Sydney, don't learn in manly harbour, Clontarf/ Narrabeen lakes would be a better idea.
Speak to locals at your spots, take your time, and you'll be ripping in none.
