Hi,

Keen to try this new water sport after decades of surfing, body boarding, goat boating, windsurfing, kite surfing, SUP surf.....

I have a minor shoulder issue, just age and wear-and-tear causing impingement/stiffness. Not too bad, physio and weights have pretty well sorted it out and I can do a few hours SUP surf with not much discomfort.

However, I am wondering if extended use above head high might be a different story. I see one can hook in into a harness like kiting, not sure how practical this is. Or even if shoulders are one of the main muscle areas of use in the sport.

What is everyone's experience? Anyone's shoulders getting an excessive work out?

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
-Laurie

I have a bad shoulder and it's been fine foiling..
I think you will only experience a problem during the learning stages and in light winds when you are holding the wing high without being on the foil..

If you choose windier days to learn (18-22 knots) you shouldn't have a problem.. The load is very light and relaxed.. Being able to wing-foil for many hours without a harness shows how easy it is on the body..

It's very gentle on my body.
you don't need a harness.
it's not jerky like windsurfing.
I have blisters on the top of my feet from kneel starting. No other marks.
I winged for four hours and wasn't worn out

Hey laurie. Ive had a couple of surgeries on my right shoulder the last one in 2018 and was skeptical about chances of staying in the wing foiling sport . 2 separate surgeons have recommended a shoulder replacement based on scans, however wing foiling for 4 months now and can spend a mostly comfortable 2 hours on the water each time, and less pain as I improve each week. Keep a positive mind set and have a crack mate . We are along time dead. Good advice for me was simulate hold a golf ball in your bum cheeks . It gets our posture well set for sffortless foiling ,
