I doubt it's water sports people. Crooks go for what looks like a backpack thinking it's got your wallet n camera etc in it. So as they drive off they will go thru it, be disappointed and chuck it. Look at the first rest areas and tracks on the way out. Every chance they're in good nick in the bush not far up the road.
