Hey Andy ,ive got some improvement to go before committing mate , but keen once ive sorted my transitions, still needing to touch down to often. Its a work in progress. ![]()
Finally started the ocean DownDinger thing after putting in a fair few sessions over winter on the river. Got some pretty nice bumps off freo and cott on my first run.
Really stomping the nose to stay on....Im going to have to drop my front wing size. Lose the training wheels...
Still beginner/intermediate. Looking to do 6 - 10km run next. City beach to Sorrento. Maybe a break or two.
Pretty confident I will get this downwind thing.

Nice, keep at it. Sounds not far to go. Always work in progress ![]()
I've just got to a point where I can get started pretty reliably and am keen to start doing downwinders regularly over summer, especially when its nuking and no good for race kites.
Starting slowly with the downwinging. Even though its howling 25 knots ...struggling to get on the foil. Its seems to me the wind waves cause alot of turbulence because the wing is so close to the water?
Once on the foil (M200) going until my legs give out which is pretty quick. Might back off when it's 25+ knots and get more 20+ knot days under the belt.
Heaps of respect to the paddle and prone downwinderers. Crazy skill.
Hi Andy, I'd be keen for wing foil DW shuffles. Just started doing some mini runs (tacking upwind and doing a small DW off Port Beach),but want to go a bit further now. Cheers

Sweet I will message you. Yup I've done a couple of port beach to cott mini runs, watermans to sorrento.
Today port kennedy to penguin Island.

How was your Port Kennedy run? a few of us down here are doing that run a fair bit, weed is an issue later in the season but seems ok at the moment.
Let me know if you are down this way and we can hook up, super keen to do Mandurah runs more this season as well.
Cheers

Coming from a kitesurfing background I found over the years one of the best places to organise downwinders in Perth with crew was the Messenger App,
So even though I am in the early stage of this exciting new discipline I though I would get the foil flying and start this group.
Wing Foiling Downwinders Perth, Western Australia
Note - this is just for contacting like minded individuals and is not intended to take the conversation away from SB which i found over the years to be the best place for this.
This sounds awesome. Andy I think I met you at Majestics/Applecross Jetty a while ago, my wife and I are keen kite-foilers and have just learned how to wing and are keen for downwinders. We also had a few goes behind our zodiac but hopefully we are past that stage now, we can both start and get on the foil both ways and starting to work on transitions etc, but riding in the surf and downwinders are the goals. I'll try to find the messenger group but if not I'll PM you guys our facebook details, cheers!

I didn't end up doing the run as I was foiled out but had a good look around for take off areas pick up points. I'm really keen. Looks good for beginner runs.
Gets pretty gnarly for a beginner past city beach, then trigg to sorrento I find especially hard and with only a few skis around a bit hairy.
It's good to see a few more getting onboard with wing downwinders and good idea with the messenger group Ioz, I have found it and joined.

Yep whilst learning shorter runs are best and finding good entry and exit points is the key.
As anyone that has tried to get out at places like Trigg or City Beach will know its way harder with a wing and foil board than a kite.
I was a bit of an early adopter and was doing some long downwinders last season, I am in the Northern Suburbs so Trigg to Sorrento or time permitting Cott/Swanny/City to Sorrento is my preferred run.
We have also done a few Pinnaroo Point to Quinns etc
In lighter winds when there is a bit of swell around I am keen to do a few runs along the reef from Centaur Marker to Little Island and beyond.
I have done a few solo runs but company would be good.

Ha yeah smashing through city beach neck snappers is interesting with a foil and wing...and landing most places.
Did a mini downwinder today last minute was a fizzler. Lots of pumping...swimming. Still good fitness. Bit more fitness and 14 knot days are very doable.
