I'm in the process of training for M2O. Pretty much everyone I know is having same issue (with and without footstraps), numb feet after 60-80 minutes downwind. I lift my toes, wiggle my feet, but nothing really makes a big difference.
Next run, I'm planning to start moving my feet more even before they get numb to see if that helps.
Besides stopping to rest, anyone figure this out?
Used to get that with really long SUP surf sessions. Better deck pads and moving feet were the best solution.
Today everyone is using thinner deck pads to cut weight.
Did a lot of longer distance racing on 14ft Sups and after 90min, yeah its gonna hurt. What helps a bit might be wearing compression running socks, thicker pad and wearing surfboots to add a bit more comfort.
Yep, keep em moving. Did 3.5 hours a few days ago. 50 miles, 80km, feet were good the whole time with no stops, breaks, rests, nothing. I put my own deck pad on too, thicker than most at the cost of some weight but worth it to me.
Better deck pads
+1You should get deck pads as flat as possible.
The big "diamonds" act as compression points into your feet soles, cutting the blood circulation.
I would sand them off.
For instance this is a pad for wave/freestyle wing boards, where your feet move constantly:
And this is a pad for cruising (in the same brand), where your feet will stay at the same place. Flat.
The deck pad on my board is thankfully not textured.
Separately, I did a near 40 mile run this weekend and made it a point to start wiggling feet before they got numb and managed almost the entire run without feet issues.
I haven't read the entire thread, but I often do 2-4 hours riding with no resting. I recently discovered that having enough deck padding makes a huge difference. I normally ride Appletree boards with nice padding, or Armstrong boards (padding's even better). Recently I did 4 hours on a board with a Foiltec pad. Yeah, those are great and very grippy, for shorter sessions. But I found my feet going numb on it after a few hours.
