Greetings all.
Looking for advice regards a wing for learning.
Surfing since i was a kid but pretty much stick to the mat these days due to injuries and retirement kgs [100]
Moved from NNSW to the north coast of Tas [Low Head] 18 months ago and realised if i want to get in the water more often, it'll have to be wind powered. Drives me nuts looking out the window and all i see is kites and wind surfers.
The intention is to get a feel for the wing on a longboard skater then jump on the SUP then commit to a board and foil.
Am thinking that a 6m kite would be the go but my concern is wind speed. Blows like buggery up here every other day.
Do i go big and stick to less wind or go smaller and more often?
Cheers
A smaller wing is better especially when learning (in my opinion).. I'd also recommend skipping the long board and sup thing and get a big foil board and big foil straight off.. How heavy are you?
I am 105kg 5m is good up to 20+ knots. Goldilocks size for larger frames people in good wind. Use a 1500+ front wing as well. Larger tails help stability. Enjoy ![]()
Hey guys, hope it's ok with the OP to ask my newbie question here...
I'm 73kg & have just bought a Ensis Spin 5.1m wing, conditions are Sunny coast usually 10-20 knts. Never winged before but experience is kiting for approx 10 years & prone foiling for the last 3-4 years...windsurf & sup experienced.
What size board, foil will be Kujira 1210 thinking min 75L - max 95L??

Hey
i would go to local beach and have a chat with the guys and see what size wing they would recommend, they will know better than us. I bought a wing first, used it on a surf sup for 4-5 sessions, got bored quickly, but it did give me a feeling for standing up on a board. Using a wing on a land board you will need much less wind than the water due to rolling resistance.
If you do get into it, you will probably end up with 2 wings so bear that in mind when choosing size.
be careful it's addictive!
The guys out front are all wind or kite surfers with no foils or wings anywhere.
Would their sail/kite size correspond in any way to a wing?

No, but still go with beer and make friends. Regardless of sport they are your crew, your vital rescue when **** hits the fan.
If there's real windsurfers at the spot(sinkers) then it's windy there. A 5 is probably your go to still. Ride that then assess if your bummed about the lighter days your missing or the windier days your missing and buy accordingly.

Wing area = kite area / 2 kinda works for me

Good point man.

Cool. Will hit up the natives and see if the maths makes sense to them.
Sounds good to me ![]()
G'day David.
Yep, 100 kegs.
So ya reckon just jump straight in?
Yes.. Just jump right in if you're going to do this..
I've used a wing on a SUP board a few times and in perfect conditions it works but to be honest it's only going to add frustration and not going help your wing ding learning process much if any..
Having a small board (compared to a SUP board) and especially with the big foil underneath will make a huge difference in the beginning because your main goal is to putter out.. turn around.. and putter back trying to get back to where you started from.. On a SUP board you get so much sideways slip that you are almost guaranteed a huge 'walk of shame'.. I'm thinking at your weight a 5m size wing will work best..The board needs to be around the 120-150 L mark with the bigges foil you can get..
Where are you located? because it would be good to meet someone at the beach and help you get started..

Thanks mate.
I'll try a wing on the sup a few times just to see how it feels in my hands so to speak and it'd be in pretty light conditions also. I can see how trying it in anything much above that would be pretty useless on a sup.
I'm up at Bell Bouy Beach Nth Tas. Currently gusting NE 15-20 knts, no swell. Normally dead flat and next to no wind/offshore or ranging through west up to 'f*ck that i'm not going outside' knots and 3-4m west swell in which case it's over to Lulworth for a left hand point break out of the wind.
