What solutions are there to mount a 360 action camera (like insta360 oneX2 or x3 or GoPro Max) on the tip of the hand wing?
What works and what not? How to best secure the camera (that is not too visible)?
I guess the question applies also to normal wide angle action camera. With the 360 the main thing is to not see the mount.
Keen to learn more and see some footage too! ![]()
I used the insta360 selfie stick with an eye bolt at the bottom. I lashed this eye bolt to either the front of my front handle (then secured the stick to the flag handle on the leading edge) or to the back of my back handle (then secured the stick to the end of the boom strut.
I ride Units with hard handles which makes this possible.

Good point! I hadn't thought about the hard handles (to which I am now transferring) and benefits for mounting!
Get the Flymount Aero best mount by far for winging
I have the original flymount for windsurfing (clamp with knob and go pro adapter on top).. and I did wonder if I could DIY something around that.. but the aero looks quite the finished product!
How does the aero feel? Is it not unbalancing the wing? Can you feel anything?
Don't really notice it on the wing, the mount is really light so as long as your cams light st not much weight. here I'm using the Flymount Aero 130 with GoPro 11 with max lens mod
If you have Instagram, check out the page for @foilthegreats. His page has some saved stories showing how to take an old GoPro headband mount and convert it into an end of strut cam mount. Just need some bungee to make it secure. Works great!
I had the Flymount for a brief time but never really liked the wing tip mount video perspective for my riding style; frequent moves where wing tip is constantly going from high to low position and back again (gets tiring to watch a wing tip perspective on video). Always preferred mounting my Max at the back of the center strut. This is just a quick-and-dirty snap-on boom mount (made with stuff lying around the shop) without any concern for making the mount invisible. Could have made a 2nd improved iteration with an invisible mount but was just too lazy
. I'm sure it would work for hard handles.
Suppose you could also take the flymount concept and do the equivalent at the rear tip of the center strut. Could also mount the max right at the back of the boom or hard handle with even less swing weight added (no extension rod required), but the cropped reframed final video gets a bit more distorted the closer the cam is to the desired reframe action. Always trade offs. And yes, it adds weight for luffing. When well powered it's fine, when way underpowered it's a bit of a pain. No one wants to wing underpowered either way.
Side notes: the Max lens mod for the GoPro is a nice option for existing GoPro owners (way better than a stock GoPro on a helmet or mouth mount) but it doesn't come close to the versatility of the Max itself imho. Also a 360 cam works great for mounting in a fixed location and you just wing around it (you essentially pan when reframing). It wouldn't work in surf or downwinding, but for flatwater stuff it's pretty cool. It hardly ever gets used that way but I love that perspective.
