Hi everyone,I'm a 90kg newcomer to wing foiling, and I'm hoping to get some input on my first board. My experienced winging friends suggest I go for a 110L board (+20L), but I've noticed a lot of people here generally recommend 30-40L over body weight. I'm looking to ride whenever there's wind, which in the European summer, is usually around 10-15kn if I'm lucky, with a few days hitting 25kn+. I've been kiting for around six years, but have no prior foil experience. My regular spots are along the Baltic Sea and some nearby non-choppy lakes.
Given this, would you advise getting a larger volume board initially and enduring a few tough sessions before downsizing? Or is it better to start big and progress from there? As for the foil, I've been eyeing the 1750 Takoon X-Glide V2. Sill undecided when it comes to the wing size though.
Thanks in advance!
You could probably get away with learning on it. Expect to look like a clown or the first few days, but you lose the right to complain if you choose to go with a board that's that close to your weight. Once up in the air it will be a bit nicer than say a 130L board. Realize too though, that at some point you'll want to go down to something in the 80 to 90L range or even less, it's just the way it is.
Agree, 110L good to learn on (I went 95L I'm 75kg) but you will inevitably want a smaller board as you progress. If you're fairly athletic, the 110 should be no problem. A 130L board would probably leave you wishing you had the 110L within a few sessions. Also, more wind is generally easier than light wind so you will want the stronger days for learning.
it's summer 10-15knots, 130 liter board and a 5m takoon ultra ( more powerfull than a takoon v2 ) but hard handle ...
experienced or not the first issue as a begginer is to have stability to climb on the board and stay up on it. no matter what 110l or 130l you will get ride of them anyway or maybe not ? i started with a lemon around 100liter it's was impossible to stay on it and lost 3-4 session trying to stand up on. i switched to a 140 liter gong lance, it's was night and day, you dont want to focus too long on climbing on your board and standing up on it, what you want is focus on flying. later you will naturaly improve you skill at standing on lower liter board and you will get something around 90L .
But what you can look at is at the weight volume ratio , and on gong carbon sandwitch it's pretty good if you ask me.
now im still with my lemon 120l after two year since it's lighter than other brand, planning on switching to something around 90L , my 120liter is my go to i do everything with it light not light .
keep in mind most of my session were on a flat water, you add the ocean factor with some swell and it's at least twice harder.
Appreciate the recommendations. I definitely see the benefit of getting something bigger for the first few sessions. Guess I'll check the used marked here if I can pick something up with 130L. Otherwise I'll probably go the middle route and take a 120L Takoon Cruise, which is still 25-30L over body weight. Since I'm cutting weight at the moment as well, I'll prob. be around 85kg soon'ish. In terms of foils, 1950 vs 1700. I've been recommended 1950 for the start, would there be any issues holding it down in stronger winds e.g. 25kn+?
