Ordering custom mast, looking for length advice for wing wave riding.
Intended use is riding up to 1m wide front wings, high and medium AR with sinker and normal boards in small waves(2ft-4ft), and downwind wind swell. Water is choppy. 11-20 knots mostly. Very experienced kite, prone and wing foiler. Using 82cm currently.

Thanks

I'd say 85 cm (if project Cedrus it'd be 87cm with the adapter) is the sweet spot. Unless your local places have some reefy spots where you must use a shorter mast. Going longer than 90cm assembled imho doesn't make sense for winging.
Material (carbon vs aluminum) and stiffness make all the difference as well.

80-90 is great for wingfoil, 70-80 for surf. Shorter is generally nicer to takeoff. be aware of mast ventilation, it happen bad on some masts and sanding with 320 grit can help. A thinner mast will have much less drag than a thick mast! Its important to balance stiffness and thickness depending on your desired performance.

Do you know what mast length the freestyle crew are using in the competitions?

Tituan Galea is most often on the F-One Carbon HM 85cm!

Well Tituan is the one to listen to.

I just have an 86cm (Axis) mast and a 110cm mast (tiny race foil). I vastly prefer the longer mast for almost all things, it makes transitions better, upwind better, gliding better, jumping better, etc.

Where it is not better is in paddling out, I'm worried about hitting the bottom. It probably is worse at doing surfing turns since it's so long, I think it makes turns more drawn out.

(imho) I will never own anything shorter than mid 80s, it seems like you need that much height to make turns without catching a rail or breaching. Shorter is only for if you're hitting the bottom all the time prone foiling.

This is a 96cm mast.

I'm considering an upgrade from my 90cm aluminum mast and wondering if I will regret going down to the 86cm carbon or if I just bite the bullet and go up to 96cm. I typically ride in the ocean with decent chop. Will be pairing this with either an 890 or 999.
