Howdy. Looking into getting my first setup. I windsurfed 20 years and kited over 10, I'm 6ft and 85kg. Seems your supposed to start on a shorter mast then progress longer. Is this necessary?
Do people actually change masts once they are going? One of my local spots is shallow at low tide so a short mast option would make sense or would I find that frustrating once I'm going.

Thanks for advice.

Anywhere 75cm to 80cm is the go to mast length for most.
you don't need to go shorter when learning IMO. Get a big 1m wide front wing to for low speed lift to learn.
plenty of great gear available from the major brands.

I started on a 65cm mast and i don't recommend it.
If i had to start again i would go 75 to 80 too.
A short mast requires more skill to keep from breaching,i would avoid them unless your spot requires it.

I recommend starting with a 65cm mast and progress to a 75 or 85 once you master it.

Learning with a shorter mast will help you recover more easily from breaches.
