Gday folks, want a low volume board I can knee start, at 80kgs I am looking at 75 L boards. Anyone had success at -5 L and knee starting?

Anyone gone even less?
Cheers

I'm 90 kgs plus 5mm suit and ride a 76L board sometimes. While I can knee start it in flat water, the easiest method in all conditions is to do the "stink-bug" start (search it in this forum) using the front strut handle and elbow on the board and climbing up from a sprawled position just before powering up the back hand. Much faster than the knee start and eliminates much of the instability you get from the kneeling position. BTW, we really need to get better names for techniques in what is already a pretty lamely-named sport (I mean, "stink-bug", "wing-dinging" etc? C'mon.)

Self deprecation is good for the soul, keep things down to earth.First step in any sport is forget your dignity and pride :)

The stinkbug start thread is here :

I tried the stink bug on the last two days on my 80l board. I'm 74kg. Both in strong and light wind

it really works. Super easy with a boom. Harder with handles

I'm 80 kilos and have been winging for ~4 months, with a background in kiting and windsurfing. My main board is a 75l Armstrong FG and I can knee start it without issues in any wind condition/sea state, though riding it in anything below 10 knots can get tricky as the board sinks. If you already know how to knee start don't worry about -5, it's basically as easy as +20.

Agree with above, I'm on -15 and although I can do submerged knee start I always do stink bug. Mike

The speed that you can get up and going with the 'bug start is key compared to faffing around getting organized in a knee start in bigger winds and heavier seas/waves. Can make the difference between safely getting out through short period shore break and getting unceremoniously dumped back on the beach with your foil wearing your wing for a hat.
