4.2 red severne sail and 66 white and red starboard board.
LOST @ THE SOUTH PASSAGE IN LANCELIN

probably from getting tumbled and washed around. the gear gets out of reach and hard to swim after

If it's windsurfing gear, then yeah. I'd never tether myself to windsurfing gear. Foiling, I'd always be tethered.

It is impossible to have a leash on sailboards, because we turn around the mast.

The rig acts as an anchor (it is heavy with little float) nearly all the time, but in rare cases, it can end up flat on the water with the boom across the rear of the board, and the board can travel quite fast this way.

Well not impossible, you could put a leash on the front of the board or mast and tack quite happily. Impractical!

He tried just once, on flat water.

Note that kitesurfers do not use leashes because it is extremely dangerous when you jump, the board will come back to hit you.

Also, I cannot count the number of times I ended up under my gear after a wipeout, being pummelled by breaking waves. With a leash, I would have risked being tangled up underwater.

This said, It may be useful for specific uses, a bit like downwinding: windsurfing in strong winds, long distances, no jumping no surfing.
In the thread they mention Sarah Hebert using a leash between her harness and wishbone handle for her crossing of the atlantic.

That was his first try but he still use it for offshore winds and when we have 30+ knots.

He says that he isn't a good swimmer so he is more confident with that.

But i'm 100% with you. It's for very specific conditions and non jumping sessions
