Just as I develop a bit of speed and lift heading somewhat downwind, I notice myself tending to lean back into the wind. Sometimes, when I initiate lean, there just isn't enough support in the wing, resulting in a backwards fall off the board. Other times, I barely get up on foil, am pumping like mad, but turn (too quickly?) into the wind and stall.
Once riding on foil, leaning back is a big part of balancing on upwind or crosswind foiling-it's when I feel most stable and powered. But at just barely foiling speeds in low wind, leaning too much spoils many a good pumping effort. Perhaps I should build more speed and lift heading off the wind before the big lean. Or lean less?
Does this make sense? Any further advice?
This seems to be pretty common, especially for those of use coming from windsurfing...for me any pull in the wing triggers a response to both lean against it, and often to also lean on the windward rail of the board...super counter productive...I have to think "flat flat flat; fast; centered and balanced" - or some similar set of thoughts
