I've had a number of sessions on the new KT Astro wings in 3m and 4m and here are my impressions so far in comparison to the previous KT Direct Drive models I previously rode:
KT Astro vs Direct Drive:
-similar, possibly better low end (very grunty)
-better high end stability
-new radial panel layout and excellent window position/material
-ergonomic boom is very nice to grip and lends to the general feeling of improved stability/stiffness
-surf handle is stiff, large, and perfectly balanced for drifting on waves
-rolls over very easily for tacks
-improved speed/upwind angle performance (leaner profile)
-Heavier than previous models but the boom effectively gives more options for controlling the slightly heavier weight and momentum
-New fluoro colors really stand out on the water (high vis safety benefit)
-Astro leech can motor a bit sailing overpowered upwind or when not fully sheeted in
-Longer/larger form factor when in its bag due to boom.
Overall the new Astro is a distinct improvement over the previous DD wing in all areas, with the only trade-offs being slightly more weight and some motoring of the leech. They are a great-performing, all-round option for surf, jumping, and free-riding with a robust construction.
