Anyone who has ridden multiple craft, what craft are you most proficient in and is wingfoil your favourite, why why not?
Simple setup, gets you out in any wind, new so sky is limit and really good vibe. Everyone is frothing reminds me of surfing in the 70s, windsurfing in the 80s and kiting in the naughties.
40year prone surfing, 30year windsurfing, mainly wavesailing, windsurffoiled 2year, 20year sup: both race and waves, winging since oct 2020 and hooked.
I,m probably the best at wave sailing followed by Sup and hardly prone anymore but most fun nowadays: wing.
Why:To get the adrenaline rush from wave sailing I need at least side-off 4.7 with pristine 2m and up waves otherwise i get bored. it might sounds spoiled, but its a bit of been there done that and I need a serious storm with huge waves to get the adrenaline pumping and that won't happen on a weekly basis.
Sup: I love to sup in clean waves from chest high to triple overhead with big barrels but living in the Netherlands also means we have the ****** UK blocking our waves so most of the time its absolute crap over here anbd our very gradually rising seabottom instead of a decent reef won,t help either in making the most out of what comes through!
The holidays are spend at the better wavespots, but there are still more weeks at home as on holiday.
a pic of what we call a good day.![]()
That is where wingfoil is genius: it makes lame conditions awesome.
You only need a light breeze to have heaps fun. We have ****ty waves, but quite often decent size windswell that you can ride with a wingfoil. Dead onshore what happens quite often is awesome: fly a 1km upwind and downwind riding the swell back to the beach and repeat. Even on the lakes we can ride the bumps, so finally a sport that really suit my local conditions!
Numbers of 2021:144 days spend in/on the water including holidays:
109 Wingfoil sessions
27 Sup
14 windsurfSome days I do multiple sports.Without wingfoil I would more often Sup in windy conditions or wave sail in light wind in crap, but even taking that in account it doubled+ my Tow.
"wingfoil: it makes lame conditions awesome."
great catchphrase for the sport. totally agree.
new to it but have been frothing on days that are absolutely mediocre.
Probably kited twice since starting to wing - and could take or leave it to be honest. A really good day for prone foiling . still pips winging though for me.
winging is just so versatile I suppose. Waves, flat, downwind swell running. Know some king, long, long term windsurfers and wind foilers who only wing now. Might say something.
I was resistant until a couple months ago: very advanced prone foiler, kiter, kite foiler, and surfer etc.
Winging is awesome! Here are my favorite reasons:
-Allows you to go anywhere with minimal setup and essentially zero danger to bystanders (can go right from a beach with your family). Opens up lots of new zones and wind directions.
-It's new and everyone is stoked on it. There is actually quite a bit of value to that.
-Allows you to be your own tow for tow-foiling in surf. In my opinion this is the best use of winging but you have to be intermediate+ to do this.
It truly is! I'm a surfer, windsurfer, SUP'r, Foiler. I love all the sports but the FL Panhandle isn't the epicenter for wind nor waves. My days on the water have gone thru the roof. When I was a kid I use to fantasize about surfing GI Joe size waves..well, now I can. ;)
It is far better than people say. It can look lame on video when someone is going slow but the feeling is incredible just mowing the lawn even. Enter waves and it's a whole new world.
I surfed for 20 years. Sailed my whole life dinghies now keelboats. Never got past lessons for kiting due to distance from a kiting beach. Windsurfed for a season as a teen but again distance to the launch was a pain despite living 20ft from the beach.
Even in CA, surf is only clean and long rides every so often. Windy season is great winging every day almost! Surfboards gathering dust. Started prone foiling on no wind small wave days, tons of fun but again conditions need to be just right. Winging is the answer, I'm considering moving to a windier place just to wing more.
I used to do a lot of kite foiling, which is still great in light wind conditions but it's really easy to get overpowered.
Winging you can go SUPER fast while still in control and it's so easy to kill the power. Going out overpowered on a 5m wing with a fast foil and doing broad reaches to go as fast as possible is awesome (that being said you could be kiteboarding those conditions and arguably having a better time...but winging is new!)
